Tank geometry and Discus capacity

I was thinking of starting another discus tank. I currently have my discus in a 110g tall tank.

I was going to start a 55-75 gallon tank (standard). But also interested in the cube shaped tanks.

Does the standard versus cube tank geometry affect the standard 1 discus/10 gallon rule (given the same tank volume)?

Personally prefer tanks with larger surface areas so tend to go for tanks that are wider than deep.
