South American Discus Community Photo Update (April 27, 2014)

Hello friends,

It has been a while since I posted images of my South American Discus Community environment. I have learned many more lessons along the way about community species... Discus are all doing fine... however, I learned a little something about dwarf cichlids... (1) German Blue Rams do best in my Discus community (2) I experimented with 4 species of Apsitos (Macmasteri, Cockatoo, Agassizi and Borelli)... and discovered all my males dead due to aggression against each other and now I only have females... (3) I love Hatchetfish and have 3 species living together on the surface... (4) 87-88F is too hot to keep plants alive and so I have balanced at 83.5F... small fish thrive, Discus are still spawning regularly and Amazon Swords are not melting.

OK, I am going to the NADA show this summer and very much looking forward to learning more. I am setting up a Discus breeding tank this summer so my daughter and I can have a project together raising fry. I have been reading up on the subject and look forward to hearing from the pros in June...

Question: Have anyone read Blehers Discus?

Second that on the group of hachets. Really nice. Also really like that pronounced head on some of your fish. Nice and round (i.e.-the red turk and nearly all your blues). Where did you get them from? Thanks for all the pics by the way! Love seeing lots of pics.

Its a hobby I enjoy working extensively on every weekend... We are fortunate in Houston to have a LFS that gets in a very nice selection of 50-100 Discus every 2-3 months or as quickly as they sell out. The choices range from 2.5" up to 8" in a wide range of varieties. HAW is my main source although I have bought from every local place that gets them in from time to time. I have also gotten into trading and store credit trading in some places like Fish Gallery. I look forward to meeting Hans Discuss and other breeders at the NADA show. I have learned differences between Germen, Asian and Wild genetic strands. My fish originate from Malaysia and I have to work to keep healthy... but at some point I will be setting up a breeder tank and intend to try acquiring German genetics.

Ok yesterday one of my Discus pairs eggs hatched into tiny wiggles attached to my driftwood. The couple spent yesterday catching them and reconnecting them to the wood with there mouths. I figured they would likely attach to moms slime coat. I have survival expectation since my tank is a community tank. Everyone here said they likely would never even hatch. After 8 months of my Discus pairs trying and I have 4 pairs I was certain it could not happen. This morning there are less but the one remaining are wiggling close to male and female occasionally grabbing on. Females still trying to keep them on wood. I'll send pics later today when I can.
