View Full Version : Welcome to the Clean House Of Turqs

This thread is dedicated to the 5 Piwow turqs I now have in my one and only 50g tank. I will try to take pics every month or so to keep track of their progress. I received them at roughly 5.5" each.

If you are interested in the bowfront stand build journal, please Click here (http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?113368-Rickztahone-s-Simple-Bowfront-Discus-Tank-%28Journal%29)

On to the pics. First a shot of the whole tank:

Eventually the sponge filter will be out of there and give me that "clean" look I am looking for. It has been referred to as "sterile" which I take as a good thing, lol. These guys already had their first water change and they didn't seem to mind it at all. They are settling in nice. There is only one that still shows signs of stress but is coming around.

One of the larger sized ones

One of the smaller ones, but I like the base color a lot on this one. I hope it has a growth spurt.

This one has finer pattern which I am not to fond of. This is also the one that still shows signs of stress, clamped fins here and there.

And last but not least, the one that I have already dubbed "beaky". Josie and Miranda were nice enough to send me pics and videos before I purchased all the discus. I mentioned that this one was a bit beaky, and Josie told me to just have him for free! A very nice gesture. Oddly enough, although this one shows a really pronounced "beak", it also seems to show the most potential to be the most vertical. We will see how his growth, and all their growth pans out.

Thanks. I must say, I am particularly proud of this overall build. The turqs were the icing on the cake :)

Thank you very much. I will try to get a better shot of the tank/stand. The shot of it shown here is very distorted due to the lens used. I was trying to avoid a furniture piece to the right of the tank so I had to get in close. I will shoot it some other day with a regular focal length to get a better perspective. Thanks again.

I plan on only doing 3x WC's per week. I did my first 100% WC today with no problems. They still need to settle down though. I offered food this morning and got no response what-so-ever. Will try tomorrow.

Thank all.

Thanks Rufus. That was the whole idea from the beginning, and I'm glad I got close to my goal :-). I just wish I had a hard scape in there with sand, lol.

I got the LED fixture in yesterday. It is pretty sweet actually. It has the sunrise/sunset effect which is really nice. Small and sleek. The thing is less than an inch thick! I only got the 24" but I can see how the 36" would have been way too much light for my setup. I'm glad the discus weren't scared of the light at first. It is nice and subtle, which is what I was looking for. The white led's sure do look good though.

Rick I'm looking for led fixture also with sunrise and sunset features and what brand are your led ?

I saw one really nice new led made by aquatic life from ken's fish and was thinking bout placing an order for all my breeding tanks.....I need to get three 36'' led for 6 tanks. Cost about $150 per unit.

I purchased the Aquatic Life EDGE LED fixture (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H3Y4YF8/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) off of Amazon for $126 shipped. Keep in mind, this was the 24". I don't plan on having plants which is why I didn't mind going cheap. However, their 36 and 48" fixtures look very promising considering how many more leds they have. I am really impressed by it though. Maybe I'll do a video for the fixture one of these days.

Nice Rick.......is the edge unit dimmable ? because I'm worried it might be overkill for my breeding tanks due to the brightness. if is dimmable then I will place an order asap now.
I would love to see them over your tank now ...lol

I have not found a dimmable option, however, when you program the unit, you basically have to program 3 sets of lights, the multi-colored (red/blue), the white, and then the moonlights. I noticed that when only the multi-colored ones were on, they were ver dim. I wouldn't say this is overkill by any means. I have had all type of lights, and this one is definitely pleasing to the eye, but it isn't extremely high output, which I don't believe it was meant to be. Wait till tomorrow and I will shoot up a video for you.

Rick,

I want to thank you for making this awesome video for me....I'm so shock when I saw the brightness and the intensity of the EDGE fixture...super bright.

I already made up my mind to purchase beamswork clip on rimless led for all my breeding tanks. Since I need to use it indirect sometimes for the fry to attached to the albino parents. As you know breeding albino discus is quite a challenge for me....lol

No problem. It probably looks much brighter in the video than it is in real life. In real life, it is simply a pleasing intensity, definitely not too bright.

Good luck with the beamswork fixture, I hear good things about that light as well.

Good luck.

And then there were 4. Lost one due to illness. Fought a battle with this group but the remaining 4 are doing great now that they have been fully medicated. Eating regularly now, they don't huddle up and seem very happy. I will get 1 or 2 more after I wait a few more weeks just to make sure that nothing relapses. Here a group shot:

No interesting updates. Lost one initially and still have 4. Growing them out more, hopefully all to 6" or so and then ill start the hardscape. Not sure if it has to do with the German strain but their appetite isn't great. They are older so it is expected but not quite on this level.

Hey Ricardo not sure if you remember me, I was talking to you when you post the piwowarski 2 up for sale but I couldn't last minute because of my tank size. But I'm glad to see you changing your mind and keeping them after all. Sorry for your lost but I'm sure that's not going to stop you from anything. I can't wait to see you raise them out and in your hardscape layout. Keep us updated, I'll check back constantly!

Sounds great. I would have preferably liked to have had 5 in there because i have never liked having less than that number in any tank, but as of now, it is working out because of the smaller footprint tank. In all honesty, I wish I had a 75g tank instead, but what can you do, lol.

I will keep this thread updated, but as of now, the tank is its same ol' boring self.

How are your fish coming along?

I may sell my 4 in the future, if I ever do, I'll make sure I give you first dibs. We may be moving soon and I'm not sure if I want to take the tank with me.

I lost a 6 inch piwo red turq just a few days ago due to bullying in the tank, it had some pretty nasty scar and i think it got infected. I should've knew better and quickly separated the bully. But other then that all my fish are doing fine, thanks for asking. There's always that thought in the back of our mind, what if we had that guy still Lol. But we just have to accept reality and deal with it. Good looking out Rick and i want to do see how you set up your hardscape, i've been debating if i should or not. My current tank do look a little boring aswell.

So far no. I was planning on doing it soon and then my wife asked me to redo my kids rooms. So, I've been painting, painting, and more painting lately that I haven't had "hobby time" lately.

Update, I sold 2 out of the 4 discus and I will be selling the remaining 2 tomorrow. The 4 discus in one tank created a bullying which I have never seen before. I just have to accept the fact that this tank is just too small for a group of discus.

With my initial 5, I would have to have done more WC's than I would like on an adult tank, and with less tan 5, the bullying was too intense. I am selling my favorite one tomorrow which will break my heart to pieces (my avatar is its silhouette), but, it is that specific discus' fault I am selling them, lol. He is the biggest bully ever! Such a nice specimen though.

This tank will house German Blue Rams from Bilbo (hopefully). I will purchase an acrylic 75g when they come up on CL and I will hopefully get some lil' ones from you :). I will NOT, however, overbuild my stand on this one, lol. If I ever move, it will take one person per corner to move.
