I like the look a lot, but aren't you worried about jumpers?

yeah, I 2nd that question, I like a lid to keep stuff in and stuff out. The tank looks great, was that a conscious choice to keep it open?

I put a lip along the edge which has prevented jumpers. It does look crowded, but my tank is a big cubed shape 4' x 4' x 3' which is 6' diagonally across, its not a linear tank and 's there's a lot more room that it appears...this vid was shot at chow time when I intentionally put the food in at one corner, so they're all concentrated and it looks like a fish farm! When I get up in the morning pre-feeding, though, they're well distributed throughout the tank so it doesn't look as chaotic as it looks here. I've got about 30 fish 3" juvies up to 7" wild with a lot of 4-6" adults and sub adults. I'm getting another tank if the fish grow out and it starts to look too crowded...that's the plan anyway.

When do you know that your tanks overcrowded? Do the fish behave differently?

I love your tank but i suggest you reduce the number of discus. There are so many of them in there and they won't have enough space to move around.
I used to think discus are a very inactive fish, until i put them in my 600 gallon. They actively move all around my tank and the they look amazing when they school across the tank.
If your discus had more space to move around they'll look much better than when they are stationary.
If you want to max your stocking capacity you can even do by cutting down the number of discus by half and have a big school of tetra or a mix

Yes, the corner that it's in has a really high ceiling and I wanted to do pendant lights hanging from above and keep the top open...I've heard that when discus jump, they almost always swim into the glass, freak out and go straight up and over, so I put the 2" wide steel lip across the top and so far so good :fish:

I getcha, but again when I walk up to the corner of the tank they all come forward thinking it's chow time -- I admit it does look crowded but all of the fish are in the front 1/4 of the tank looking for food during this vid and are typically more spread out and swimming around more.

According to the Forum guides (discus per 10 Gal) you can keep 32 discus in your aquarium.

According to Stendker they recommend 10 to 12 in a 180 Liter aquarium .... which is Discus per 4.75 - 3.96 Gal.

They are both far apart, so if you are somewhere in between you should be fine.

Although, I see an issue with Stendker recommendation (Foot print wise), because they recommended 10 - 12 fish in a 1 * 0.4 *0.45 meter aquarium, this leaves each discus with a 10x40 to 8x40 cm area for each discus

Thanks for the affirmation. I've heard fish do well in concentrations up to 1 per 6 gallons (which seems tight even to me). I imagine that fish at that concentration would have a harder time reaching their maximum potential, though, unless there were daily 90% WCs. I'm going to stick by my 1 to 10 gallon until I notice stress behavior that might be due to overcrowding: too much territorial behavior, restricted swimming, too much food competition for the weaker members, stress related illness etc.

Great looking tank. I like the planted corner. Looks like you have more discuses than dither fishes.
