I've been noticing in a lot of tanks heaters placed in a horizontal position. Is this necessary for discus?

If you don't want them to burn themselves when they try to breed on it then it is.

So in a vertical position they will breed on it but not when its horizontal?

most likely they choose vertical object to lay eggs. another reason not to put vertical is discus freak out, run and stuck between heater and side of tank.

Great question....as I have read & wondered about this as well. I bought a submersible heater & it shows not to use it in any other position other than vertical. Which I don't see why I "couldn't" use it horizontal since it's submersible. Not sure if I should send it back or not.

Also horizontal is easier to deal with with large water changes. Some of my tanks I do around 90%,so I have them resting on the bottom. What brand is your heater?

Im using 2-300 watt and 2-200 watt jagers hooked up to a controller. I know it seems like a lot but my basement gets cold in the winter. The tank is a 180 and the 2-300 watt heaters are in the overflows. Im gonna turn the other 2 horizontal.

In fact,it's important point 'your heater must be in the water.' Good luck:)

I've always wondered if a heater is more efficient in the horizontal position. One would think that a horizontal heater is in contact with " a wider water column" that will rise when that water warms. I keep my heaters horizontal for easy water changes and to prevent the heater from serving as a spawning site (heck, I'd let my discus spawn on my arm if I could get them to lay eggs......waiting.....still waiting.......LOL).
