I have a local pet store just starting to carry discus and they are doing well on her set up she is very willing to work with me and get the things I want but she will not guarantee her discus and she is charging 40 for pigeon bloods and 80 for red turquoise all at about 3 inches. A lot of her fish have the peppering on them that I really don't like but I can buy around that but I'm worried about not being able to see the fish before I buy them if I go online and order not so much abouy quality as I'm sure I can read reviews about fish but I'm worried about coloration and I just want to be able to see what I am buying. I live in ny in alfred its an hour and a half south of rochester almost in pa. Any suggestions? Also I noticed online looks to be cheaper.

Do not buy at a store bottom line. Where do you think she is getting them from? She's probably ordering from some big wholesaler who doesn't out nearly the effort and time into stock.

Don't worry about seeing the fish. Any breeder/seller you buy from on here will bend over backwards to hit your wants and needs spot on. Remember they are experts! They know what they are seeing and have seen thousands upon thousands of fish. I've had the pleasure of dealing with a lot of the suppliers here. Kenny the ladies at Chicago mike beals snookin for wilds. They have all hit the mark and then some. I told them exactly what I wanted down to markings in some cases and I was blown away every time. They sent pictures videos to show me what I was getting.

Bottom line of my rant is order here. You will not regret it

Order online for sure, from one of our sponsors here on Simplydiscus. They are very highly regarded in this community and you will find they all have healthy quality stock, they wouldn't be a sponsors otherwise. Most have some sort of pictures or video when the fish arrive so you can see their condition/color but you shouldn't have any fear buying them unseen from our sponsors.

If your really lucky you might live near a breeder/importer. I have the fortune of living near Mike Beals. I would not hesitate to buy from any of the sponsors. Take a look at their forum pages you can see the quality of their fish.

All the above replies to your post are true! Sponsors from here at the forum are to be trusted through and through! Here are a few pics from my tanks and all of these discus came from three sponsors on this forum. Kenny, Hans and ChicagoDiscus. Each and every fish delivered was more than I bargained for and more.http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w615/Rudustin/IMG_0962_zps3251b254.jpg[/URLhttp://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w615/Rudustin/IMG_0902_zps6d5e7f4f.jpg (http://s1332.photobucket.com/user/Rudustin/media/IMG_0962_zps3251b254.jpg.html)http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w615/Rudustin/IMG_0960_zps630349c7.jpg[/URLhttp://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w615/Rudustin/photo-2_zps0eb2dfe4.jpg[/URLhttp://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w615/Rudustin/IMG_0926_zps614d2a73.jpg (http://s1332.photobucket.com/user/Rudustin/media/photo-2_zps0eb2dfe4.jpg.html)

If you can travel to a sponsor please do so. Please check what the sponsors carry. If you want you can TELEPHONE or email a SD sponsor and tell them what you want. Most or all of them can email you a picture of the actual fish you are buying. It is OK to have fish shipped, live delivery is guaranteed.

new2discuss - please understand there is a HUGE difference between buying from some random on-line source and one of the many sponsors here. There are lots of threads in the vendor review section with horror stories about many if not most of the random guys. Conversely if you read the reviews of most of the sponsors the reviews will generally talk about peoples expectations being exceeded, even if the prices are higher than the random guys sometimes charge. It's sooooooooooo much easier to keep discus that were good and healthy to begin with than trying to nurse poor ones back to health, and by the time you finish paying for meds you've spent as much as you would have for really nice fish anyway.

A few things here:
-pet stores and where breeders send their unsuitable discus: order direct online from a reputable dealer and you'll be getting better fish;
-pet sotres have so much cross contamination going on the likelihood of yours having a disease are higher than ordering online;
-don't worry about price: would you rather have a $60 discus that looks like crap and then dies, or a $100 on that grows to a nice looking fish?
-If peppering really bothers you, go albino: Kenny has a some Albinos that are stunning, and I've gotten good ones form both Kenny and Jeff Moy at exotic discus; can't go wrong with either, and they will NOT pepper on your and their tails won't turn black.

Good Luck.

Besides albinos, goldens are also a good option and Kenny often has those as well.

If you don't like peppering do not go with a pidgeon derived strain.

I think you are about 5 hours away fron Hans's location (near Baltimore) I think if you wanted to make a road trip of it and go pick out your own fish from the hundreds/thousands that he has.
