View Full Version : Suggestions for a tank divider?

I have a pair of rafflesias that have spawned several times in the last several weeks. last night they decided to spawn again. They have tank mates, two blushing reds and one san merah. In the past they have eaten the eggs as fast as the female could lay them. This time I actually saw the male cover the eggs and this morning they have continued to care for the eggs and they have not picked on them as they have in the past. My question is I could divide the 55 gallon tank but with what? My other option is that I could move the other three occupants quite easily and simply move them to other tanks that I have. I am getting a 125 gallon tomorrow so there is no problem with moving the other occupants because I have plenty of room in five other tanks that I do have. I have seen somewhere on the forum in the last two years that people have used what I think are egg crates for dividers. If that is so where do I get them and are they easy to cut to fit the 55 gallon? Appreciate any replies. Rufus

You can buy the egg crates at local hardware store like Lowe's Home improvement or Home Depot.

I get mine at Home Depot in the lighting section, cut slightly smaller to fit the width of the tank then hold in place with suction cups.

if you use eggcrate, make sure it's perfect fit so fry wont go thru other side and become tankmate food. Move tankmates is better option in my opinion.

good luck,
tony

Poret foam will allow water flow and keep fry from going into dangerous areas.

You'll eventually want them to have their own tank. Why not move the others now and leave the family together.

eggcrate = any local hardware store costs a few bucks, cuts pretty easy with a pair of wire cutters. Definitely cover it to keep the babies on the right side. In a snap, you can use a clean white pillow case that has been washed in just bleach then air dried outside, not in the dryer where there have been dryer sheets. It makes a good divider if in a hurry. make two and you can insert a new one before you remove the old one for washing.

Just curious because I have never done this, but can't you just put fiberglass window screening over the egg-crate?

Poter foam is the way to go!!!! Yeah this stuff isn't cheap, but it's aquarium-grade, effective, and it'll outlast all of your fish as long as you take care of it. I've heard of people using upholstery foam but that stuff is so full of weird fire - retardant and preservative chemicals that I would never trust it. The Poret was definitely one of the best investments I made for my fish room.

What about the mesh type tank dividers sold at fish stores. Would those not keep small fry on their side of the tank better than egg crate?

I used mosquito net for windows, made of nylon wire. And attached it with fiberglass pipes.
It's good that the water can flow, because the more water you have the less problems with ammonia, dirt, organics, pathogens etc.
