Hi there. I am fairly new to the Discus world but I have become absolutely obsessed and all my discus have absolutely thrived. But I'm wondering about one in particular I got from a local LFS instead of my usual breeder. It was labeled a "German Blue Diamond" and it is very small, 2 inches give or take, and already a fairly bright blue. It has nice shape to it and a high fin but I'm assuming it is stunted or something because I have a leaopard snakeskin that is over 3 inches and it's color is still coming in... Can someone explain this to me? if this "German Blue" is likely to ever be the size or a regular healthy discus or will it stay a runt???? Thanks :)

A picture would be more helpful here. It sounds like that discus is already showing adult colors and may be stunted but again, the picture would help more.

A picture or two would definitely help. Do you know the age of your discus. If not, can you tell us how long you have had them and how big they were when you got them.

Discus should reach 2" between 2 and 3 months. If you have had it for several months now (?) and it was probably at least a couple of months old when you got it then it would be stunted. Hard to say how much without seeing it. Discus should reach 3" between 3 and 4 months of age so that will give you an idea where lss is in the growth curve. It could be behind on growth also.

I believe you have to make 10+ posts in order to get the pic option.

or you can always do external pic link using tags

Did you by chance get them from a fish store called pieces pet emporeum here in Canada , I have also seen them there and they have to be stunted at this store cause they have had them for 2 months and they didn't show any signs of fast growth which may mean there really stunted , I've looked at this store a couple times this past month and didn't see much improvement , but that's just the lfs near where I live

YES!!! that is exactly where I got it! I am from Calgary and for my smaller community tanks I love the selection Pisces has on community fish but usually steer clear of their Discus for they are not very good quality and don't always look very healthy. But he was so cute and attentive and has been very curious and otherwise healthy. Here is a better pic and you can definitely see the difference especially against my breeding pair of PB's from Golds ... oh well, I guess he adds some depth to the tank lol.

I've bought a total of 6 discus from them , 5 are alive and well, i lost 1 fish due to health problems maybe a couple days after i got em, 1 is stunted , but the rest are growing out nice, i recommend you go to golds aquarium on17th ave ne, go on the right days and he has the best selection, good prices for quality discus i have bought 8 discus and 2 breeding pairs from him.

I also have bought 2 pairs and 6 other Discus from Golds. They are my absolute favorite! Nicest I've seen in Calgary for sure but I haven't checked out Alberta Discus yet ... I should have known better but at least it's otherwise healthy and has nice little shape. Did either of your pairs from Golds spawn at all??? I haven't had any luck yet and I have a female blue diamond that has never been the same since she left Golds and Ive been treating her and obsessing over her ever since. Shes in no way breeding material anymore and if I am so lucky to save her I still don't think she ever will be :( The Pigeon Bloods in the picture are from Golds though and they are beautiful!

i had one pair my golden pigeons spawn about 17 times now, 12 of them being of good success , last batch i got was around 70 free swimmers , but my second pair haven't hit maturity yet , i do expect them to lay in like 1 month max , it took awhile though, they did fight a lot at first and thought one would kill the other, but i introduced both pairs to each other in the same tank, and all of a sudden my male red melon fell back for my white face red , so everything worked out for me with golds.
