The previous owner told me that this pair is about 4 year old. I haven't measured it out because I don't want to stress it out, may be will do that once it feels a bit more comfortable in the tank or when I move it into the 90G tank that I'm still working on. The male based on my estimation is about 8.5", and the female is 7". They make my 5.5" leopard looks really small lol

Here are some pictures:

Anyone knows what those spots on his face are?

This is the 90G tank. That's 5" of white sand with 2 bags of Eco-complete substrate at the bottom. Don't know if I should add more plants beside a few amazon swords that I will be adding soon, what do you guys think?

Why are we not looking at these two new fish in a QT tank?

I no longer have a QT tank, my parents aren't too happy with me having too many tanks in the house :(
And the man that I bought this from only have this pair in the 90G tank and no other fish.

Do you know what's wrong with the BD's face?

Btw, you were right. The golden female does have some PB in her.

Not planning to add any more fish anytime soon. the 90G will be only for the discus and electric blue rams that I'm moving from my 125 gallon :D

From the picture it just looks like a variation in pattern/color in the cartilaginous tissue in the head region.

I was asking about a cross between Blue Diamond and Sunshine from the Breeding section and you suspected that this "sunshine" probably has some PB in her.

My guess is they are not quite that big but I hope you prove me wrong. It takes a really, really big discus to make it over 8 inches. On the color......I have seen lots of BD's do that when they start getting pretty old. Also that is not a cross I would do.

Thanks John! I can't wait to measure the guy. My hand is 7" and i barely have his whole body without the tail on my hand haha.

Thank you for your advice! :)

It depends on the strains. Some grow bigger than others or so I've read. I measured my boy fish he's 6 and 3/4 in. My red melon yellow faced girl discus is about 6 and a1/2 haven't measured her out of the tank but I did measure the boy. 83615
Does anyone here know what strains grow largest? I read somewhere some kind of eruption discus or so it was called gets close to 8"? My other discus were from an online seller and were stunted but great out decently. I had just gotten into the hobby but at least I can say I've had these fish for about a year and a half. Some close to 2.

Here are some of the others that didn't quite make it to the size they could have but they do look ok. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/15/05ef79425509fa5e3b85250889db9de2.jpg

Sorry but any strain could get big or small. There is not any one strain that I have seen that gets significantly bigger than others.

It was on a sellers site so it was probably said to persuade people into buying them. It said that these specific strains grow larger it's called a penang eruption discus pretty nice looking. 83616

Interesting, not quite sure I agree with this completely. While an 8" fish is indeed an exceptional fish for any strain, I do tend to believe as a whole some are more prone to be larger on average then others...........

Not sure if "strain" is even the right terms, rather "mutations" might be better.

For instance, it will be much easier to find an 8" turq than it would say an albino or golden.........

Well albinos seldom get as large as genetically superior strains.......

Thank you I appreciate it! I took very good care of them when they were younger growing up. A lot of beef heart and water changes.

Lol, Ok everybody run for cover now............

Does that then make a pigeon blood genetically superior to a turq?

growing faster, maturing faster, growing bigger (or at least as big) :)

Long story short, there are some strains, on average, that do have a tendency to grow bigger, or at least are a bit easier to grow big. But yet, there are exceptions to every rule as well.
