I just went and picked up this tank I was told that it's 108 gallons. It came with a light, heater, canister filter and under gravel filter, decorations and a canopy. :)

Next to our 90 gallon and 72 gallon bowfront. If you can imagine this is our dinning room. The tiny table in the middle is where we eat. Lol

Started the build today; the tank is confirmed at 110 gallons. I am adding sand and driftwood to the tank as well as filtration to start the cycling process.

Here is the tank filled with water with a thin layer of sand at the bottom. It needs to be evened out a bit more and I may take some out as I continue the cycling process.

This is a picture of the driftwood we went and found in the woods. It's elm which is safe for aquarium use .

Yea we are very lucky that we have oak and elm, the ceder wood looks cool but we cannot use it.

Thanks, I just bought it this way but it has made cleaning very easy. Especially because it's actually very heavy.

So true! It's crazy being surrounded by fish tanks but it's also so peaceful.

how do you find driftwood in the woods? Is there a lake in the woods?

a lot of woods near us have lakes or ponds and streams or rivers rather, that have gone down, leaving wood that was underwater for a long time but is now out, since i cant find any hardwood yet most of ours is slush, but i would think there are a lot of places allowing you to collect driftwood like this, once the water level has gone down.

To sanitize don't you have to boil? How do you boil something so large?

No it's a flood area that takes down trees and then dries up to a small creek.

oak and elm are aquarium safe? do they not rot?

Oak and Elm are both hardwoods, so while all wood does eventually rot away, hardwoods do so over a very long time period of time that does not harm the fish. In fact many fish enjoy and benefit from the release of tannins from the wood.

No I have never heard of boiling wood to sanitize it for aquarium use. Some people use boiling as a way to remove harmful toxins from the wood like cedar, but I would still never trust using those woods.

You boil wood to sanitize it from other freshwater diseases -- especially if it comes from a lake or stream. While diseases transmitted from driftwood are not common it has been known to happen. It also speeds the tannins release. Some people will bleach if boiling is not possible to limit the possibility of disease transmission --- but all in all if you use natural driftwood you risk disease. Now yours from a dry creekbed is probably the safest for a natural option --

I personally have fallen in love with the Universal Rocks artificial stuff.... no disease risk!

Tank looks nice!! Can not wait to see it fully set up.

I see, I guess I didn't really figure that because I've never used a piece of driftwood that was small enough to fit into a pot to boil. Lol

As a side note I don't even know if the wood that we got had ever even been exposed to water with fish in it. I just know that we found it on the ground and it looked awesome so I grabbed it after verifying that it was elm. It was not located in the creek bed although it was located in an area that is known for flash flooding.

Ok so I didn't like the way the wood was so I moved it around. The tank has been cycling now for almost a week and it was crystal clear before I did the redesign/water change.

I love whede the placement of the driftwood is :) this is going to be a very nice tank. Might I add that putting some anubias attached to the branches would really make your tank look stunning

The anubias was a thought that I had, but with this tank I really want to try to do no plants at all, and see if there is a difference in my discus. :)

Just did a water change on the 110 gallon aquarium.
Should have fish in it within the next 2-3 weeks.

I've used cedar stumps and knees for years in my aquariums with no ill effects noted. I've also used cork bark flats for terracing and tubes for hardscape. Except for the fact that cork bark is obviously very buoyant it works really well, giving a very natural look. I've found that any hardwood driftwood that is well aged in water works well in my tanks.

I have spent way to much on my fish to risk them to the toxins that are known to exist in Cedar Wood. Especially when there are so many other safer driftwood varieties in the area that do not pose a risk.

Ok here are some really crappy pictures of them moments after I plopped them in. They are not happy right now but that's normal.

Sorry about the glare the house is full of natural light in the daytime.

They are red turks with the black halo feature.

Miss Fish,

You are absolutely correct about cedar, I misspoke, I've used cypress knees and stumps successfully. I must have had a brain lock when I wrote that post. Cedar is way too aromatic for a tank.

They were sold as Red Turks With Black Halo's but they don't really look like my other one's. They are very golden and brown looking instead of blue like my other one's. Here is a picture of the other one's I have.

Thanks I appreciate that, I have done a lot of research on the subject recently, and I am confident they are turks as well.
Since I have hard water these fish are as close to wild as I can get though.:o

When I finish school I want to try my hand at breeding discus but as it stands I don't have time now.
