I'm just talking about the difference between a 21" tall up to, say, 31"(glass cages) on a 6' or longer tank. I'd think taller is better. Any reason to think otherwise?

You want to be able to easily clean the tank glass walls, vac the substrate, plant flora, trim/replace plants, etc. - so 24" tall tanks (or less) make that readily doable, unless you have very long arms, and are ok with using a stepladder.
Something to think about.

Anything taller than 24" is a pain to reach the bottom during cleaning. If you have long arms go for it.

I had a 31" tall 150,and that was part of the reason I was able to convince my wife into a 24" tall 180.Pain to clean.

Always two sides. I have a 30" 220 and a 30" 110 and love both of them. It really isn't that difficult to clean them. Yes I do stand on a step stool but that isn't a big deal. I have to stand on the stool to get to all the tanks on the top racks. I don't have particularly long arms and with a standard siphon tube I am able to reach the bottom and vac the sand in the whole tank. It is worth the trade off.

Thanks guys. Good ideas to consider. So, the fish don't care?

I think for the fish the more the water the better, but bigger tank means more filtration.....

I have a 8ft x 24" x 30" high and It is good for display purposes as it is built for. I wouldn't use that tall of a tank for anything else though.

I love tall tanks. Fish probably don't care all that much, but as stated above, more water is better.
