Removed gravel filter and put HTH pool filter sand 50# and also two
ATI max III prefiters on my power heads

Sand beats gravel, bare bottom trumps sand.

Fine sand is a nice substrate if you plan on keeping plants. One of my tanks is a natural Hudson River sand planted tank. As long as you keep your water quality high and do your water changes you should be fine. More details about your setup and background keeping Discus would help. - Stu
