What is the best temp. for adult discus? When I had my wilds I used to keep it around 82-84f.I keep my domestics around 85F give or take a degree.I was always told to keep it in the mid eighties and 86f for juves. What's your thoughts?

I never stray much from 82-84f (28 - 29C), for everything.

You'll get alot of opinions on this. Many keep them at 82... I keep my adults and breeders at 82F, fry and juvies I've always kept them at 84-86.

The 84-86 or higher range is actually whats reported for temps in Discus natural Habitat... (basing this on Hans MayLand's Book Adventures with Discus-- many great pages of lab tests on various habitats btw)

Note though Discus have been successfully raised in a range of water temps from the low 80 to high 80s. I wouldn't go lower than 81 F or higher than 86/87F as most discus will do fine in that range...however for breeders...81/82 is probably best and most common.

Discus fish caught in the wild feel most comfortable in water which most closely resembles the water in its original Amazonian habitat. There the water is very soft (overall hardness: 0-3, carbonate hardness 0-3, the pH value is very low 4-8) and the conductance value is also very low (100-400 µs).

Our discus fish, however, have been used to harder water (tap water) for generations. The values for the water in our system are as follows: overall hardness 15, carbonate hardness 8, pH value 7, conductance value 800 µS, with a water temperature between 29°- 30°C.

The main water parameters for our discus fish lie within the following tolerance range: hardness 0-30, carbonate hardness 0-25, pH value 4.0-8.3; electrical conductance 150-1200 µS. Water temperature briefly between 25-35 °C.

29-30 C = 84-86 F

But love the temp range they may experience briefly....

Water temperature briefly between 25-35 °C

25 C= 77F
35 C= 95 F

Just some info to digest.:)

Hey John,
How do you keep the Temp 82 in the Summer down there... do you air condition the fish room? Its got to be sweltering!

I leave all of the windows open and fans running. The temop in the tanks will creap up but it rarely gets about 85 or so.

I ran into the same here in the basement fishroom in the summer... lots of fans and usually for the summer months 85-86 , good for utilities.. but way too Humid here.

i think the question in some cases are how high do i set the heater.i set mine to 30 degrees celcius and actual tank water is uniform at 28.just how i see it.so i aim to keep actual water temp at 28 degrees,

I used to keep mine at 86 f. for years but recently switched to 82 f. Some chronic infection issues with some of the older fish don't seem to be as prevalent as before. This seems to be a better temp. to keep them.

BTW. My electric bills are also a bit lower now.
