Someone on another forum is selling this wild discus and I wanted to hear your opinion on him.

He said that it's a Uatuma Semi Royal Discus, imported directly from Brazil. About 5.5"

I know it might need some work but how much work I'm not sure about.

What do you think?

Anyone else having this problem? Might be because I took it for another forum?

I think you will need to be a member of that forum to see anything. I couldn't see the pictures either and I pasted your link into the browser and it wants me to log into the forum.

Well, it looks to be in good condition from the pictures with a nice red eye. What kind of work are you referring to? Can you get a pic looking down the side of the fish?

By work, I mean longer QT, meds, TLC etc. For now I do a month in QT with daily WC, Feeding BH with some meds. As for the image down the side, I can ask and see what comes back. Thanks Pat

Not a bad looking Blue. It is a bit of a stretch to call is t semi-royal though. Besides the striations on the shoulder the body is pretty solid.

Yup not a bad looking blue face heckle at all.

I have never quite understood the fascination with some of the wilds. In regards to the fish on the left, I get fish (domestics) identical to this all the time, if you were to put them in a tank with that wild you couldn't tell them apart. It must be something other than the aesthetics.......

It might be just me - but upon seeing many wilds over the years, generally speaking I get the sense that most of them seem to have deeper, more well rounded bodies, and more evenly rounded top & bottom fins than most domestics.
( e.g. - just like the one on the right)
Also, I can't recall seeing any with a trailing arced dorsal fin like what is sometimes seen on some mature male domestics.
Am I just imagining that trait ? - LOL

Both pictures are side views and I think the fish looks thin. A straight on picture would tell if I'm right or wrong. The heckle does not look thin.

Well I'm still going to get it anyway so I'll have to give it the usual treatment and see what happens. BTW, what might be a good cross for breeding?

It isn't really breeding quality.

Do you know it's gender? If male no problem. If female a bit more tricky.

Good point Larry but I plan not to put this one in the public domain atm. I just wanted to play around with the line as this is my first wild. What would you recommend anyway if you wanted to cross the line?

@ pat, nope don't know but I would venture to say it's 50/50 male or female LOL. Ok OK all jokes aside, I really don't know what gender it is, but I'm hoping it's a male.

It may be the case with this fish, but not the case for most wilds I kept.

It's a nice Blue Discus but it looks a little thin in the middle. The bulge in the middle usually isn't a good sign. The Heckel is very nice. I don't know if it's possible to treat this fish and have it put some weight on. It looks like it could be in the early stages of some type of wasting disease.

The owner said he didn't have time for it anymore so that might account for the declining quality? But I'm still going to get it and give it the good old collage try.

Its hard to tell what its potential is genetically. I've had some really nice fish come from okay looking wilds in a wild X domestic cross... Had some dogs too. If you want to try it and see what happens. Try it to any of these... Red Turq, standard Leopard, Blue snakeskin, san merah... You can also try to albinos... avoid any pigeon base fish. Pick the best shaped Domestics you can to help offset this ones shape.
