Hi All,

I want to add some Manzanita wood to my Discus tank; however, I'm worried they will kill themselves. They spook sometimes and pick on each other, can they hurt themselves on the driftwood?? Has anyone lost a fish because of this??

Thanks,

Penny

Impaled no, damaged fins/scaled yes. I've never had a dead fish from hitting DW, but I'm sure other members might have more experience. I would in anycase look for DW and try to point them downwards etc to avoid any mishaps.

It is definitely something to consider. I have very blunt pieces of Mopani and my adult wilds still get a mark or two from time to time. The more prone your particular fish are to mad dashes, the more I would sand down sharp points or whatever it takes to round things off.

I don't have this in my tanks for this reason, even though I bought the stuff.

I read on the forum last week where, sorry I don't have the link off the top of my head, where someone lost their prized and beloved Discus due to it smashing against sharp driftwood like this.

Yeah, something tells me NOT to do this. Glad I asked before I jumped.

let them get comfortable before you jump on the wood.
