I'm planning to set up my first discus tank in the next few months and was wondering if you think this plan would work. The reason behind this idea is to grow out the juvis in the display tank. Planning to get a DSA 175g RR tank with the overflow on the end in a peninsula set up. I was thinking I could get a maxspect gyre and place it upside down near the bottom of the overflow. This would create a constant flow across the bottom of the tank to help prevent food / detritus from settling and basically blow it up and over the top to the overflow.

I tried attaching a pic but don't seem to have that ability.

Thats a lot of water to constantly change

I guess I did leave part of that out. I plan to have them in a grow out tank for about 6 mths or so while the big tank is maturing with plants and a few dither fish.

With a low bio load and good filtration what would be the best water change plan?

For my non discus, 75 gallon planted tank, I do a 50% change every 4 weeks. That is with weekly top offs though. When I do do a water change, my nitrates are between 0 and 10.

With Discus though, I'm not sure. If they were full grown and the filtration was excellent, I'd bet you could get away with once a week, but I'll differ to someone with more Discus experience

That was my goal was to do weekly. I've got a reef tank now that I do weekly changes on so I'm on a schedule and haven't missed a week yet.

I finally have the option to upload the pic. I'd set the powerhead so there's a nice constant flow across the bottom.

while you have them in the growout tank you will need to change 50% daily. Once you get them grown and in the display tank depending on bio load you can prob get away with 50 % 2-3 times a week.
