I'm going to be ordering fish and stocking my 180 gallon in the next few weeks. Been thinking I could stock a school of 30-50 cardinal tetras, a handful or so of corys, two or three bristle nose and 10-12 discus. Does this sound reasonable.

Sweet just been bouncing ideas around in my head have thought about adding a few more discus or maybe 3 or 4 more corys or maybe a pair or two of rams. Not sure yet just trying to plan ahead a bit

Sounds good. Have you considered some Rummy Nose Tetras?

I've had both rummies and tetras and the tetras pop a little more, but the rummies schooled better for me.

+1 for the rummies. They school better than cardinals, but I have had both at the same time and I loved how the large group of rummies and cardinals looked together. They are about the same size and have the same needs. I think the proposed stock list you have sounds fantastic. I would love to see a pic of this tank once you have is fully stocked.

Rummy nose are great schoolers. They inhabit the bottom and middle half of my planted tank along with my cardinal tetras. I also recommend prinstella tetra. The Rummies will school with the Prinstella in the middle bottom half of the aquarium. And at top water column Black neon tetras school. That way from top to bottom you have activity and the discus feel safe in all zones of the aquarium. Has worked for me and the tank is always in constant movement. Even when the discus decide to just chill and lay back.

You can keep a LOT of cardinal tetras in a tank that size. I have 75 in a 40 gallon tank and they grow well and seem content. I have twenty in a 120g and they basically get lost.

I agree. I just bought fifty cardinals. They are still in Qt. They look great in the 20 gallon Qt tank but I'm sure when they get into one of my 125g they won't look as dense. Three years ago I bought forty cardinals. I still have six of the original ones.

You might also look into lemon tetras.
