For the last 14 years, I have been using 1/2 teaspoon per 20 gallons of Cloram-X, For the first time, I just purchased some Seachem Safe. Does anyone know what the equivalent is for 1/2 teaspoon of Cloram-X to Safe? Or, has any other dosing suggestions?

Thanks,

Looking at the back of the bottle and for chlorine 1tsp for 200gals. So it looks like we're using too much. Been doing it for so long that 1/4 tsp to 50gals seems light but that's what the bottle says.

Your right on the money Bill. 1/4 tsp for 50g x 4 = 1 tsp for 200g.

You can also safely overdose up to 4x according to Seachem, with both Safe and Prime. I always add a double dose just to be sure because when they flush the lines in my city (without telling us, naturally) because I've had issues in the past. So I usually use about 1/2 teaspoon for my 55 gallon tanks and a heaping teaspoon for the 150 and 210 gallons.

Thank you for all the helpful information. Being so concentrated, I wanted to know what people were doing on smaller tanks. With all the good replies, I think I have it and then some.

Using safe to remove Ammonia it says to use 1 TSP per 40 Gal.

I'm not sure where some of these numbers are coming from... from my new bottle of SAFE: "Use 1.25g (1/4 tsp) for every 1,250L (300 US gallons) as needed to reduce chlorine and chloramine or use 1.25 g (1/4 tsp) for ever 300L (75 US gallons) for ammonia." ... further down it states: "To detoxify nitrite and nitrate in an emergency, up to 4 times normal does may be used." and then "If temperature is > 30 C (86 F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, use a half dose".

So if you are just treating tap water you would only need 1/16 tsp for 75 gallons of water. you only need a 1/4 tsp for 75g if you are trying to neutralize ammonia in a tank (ie not new water).

1 tsp per 40 gallons would be almost 8x the recommended dose for ammonia (ie the higher dose).

I am personally struggling to dose appropriately to my 55g aging tank because it takes so little.

Does anyone know if there is a proper way to make a solution of Safe that is Shelf stable?

Your best bet is to go by what the bottle tells you to dose. You do not need to follow someone else's dosing advice because the manufacturer may have changed something and that is something that isn't being accounted for by people with a label that says to dose something differently.

The first, second and third thing I did was read the bottle. But my fish looked stressed at the suggested dose. I wanted to know what Discus people who use the product were doing.

Your discus may be stressed due to something else? You can safely add a whole bunch of safe in to the water column with no problems, at least not like the ones you are describing.

Stressed from the Chlorine. Im still using Cloram-X for now. I change water on a bunch of tanks. I will test a double dose when I have time. I think that will do it. Label vs. real world problem (in my case).

I know this is somewhat off topic but somewhat related but I use a syringe to measure
5 mL = 1 tsp
15 mL = 1 tbs
30 mL = 1 oz
It's a lot more accurate

Safe is the powdered type. I'm assuming you are referring to the liquid form.

I ahve used seachem safe for the first time, i added 1/8 tsp to 30 gallon aging barrel... is this correct??? it seems so minute, i feel like i should use more... anybody know.???.. it did not have a scoop in the container. Or it is at the bottom of the powder somewhere... if 1 tsp is for 250 gal.. then about 1/9 tsp for 30, so i put 1/8, just checking dont want to screw up water for something like this....THx Ellen g...

You should be fine at 1/8tsp. Even if you did 1/4 you'd still be ok. It is difficult to overdose on Safe. Safe will last you a realy looooooooooooong time.
