Completely frowned upon by purists ,if this is indeed a cross of the two. I was told to discontinue the same pairing because the fry would look horrible. I think this looks awesome.

I think that name checkerboard applies to the pattern of the discus and not how he was crossed.
Don't worry, you haven't been mislead with the advice about not crossing the PB with non PB strains.

you are correct it is about the pattern, that discus was not crossed with PB.

Checkerboard usually describes a pattern associated with PB-type discus. I've seen this discus described as scribble or mosaic turquoise. But, what's in a name?
