I came back to the hobby about 8 months ago after a long hiatus. Found Hans and since then I have been getting all my fish from him. 2 Weeks ago a got one of his Male Leopards and moths before that I bought a lovely female brilliant turq. She has been laying eggs in my tank all on her own but now she found a good mate. They laid eggs yesterday and are being good parents. Taking turns fanning and watching over the eggs while the other one eats. The male is actually more attentive than I expected. I hope they have babies soon. This would be a first for me.

Hi All,
I hope someone can provide some helpful advice as I am very new to this particular situation. I have a confirmed pair in which we found out a week ago, so I have moved the Neon Sapphire and Mosaic Leopard from my 65 gallon to a 29 gallon bowfront I setup this past weekend. The two have spawned about an hour ago and the eggs are on the intake tube of my MarineLand 200 power filter. I am currently waiting for the breeding cone to arrive in the mail, and since I do not have the breeding cone, or a screen, I detached the intake tube and placed it in a hang on the tank net to prevent the eggs from being eaten by the parents. I understand from reading here on SD that within 48 hours, there should be signs of life (wigglers), and I have read on other websites catered to breeding discus, that Methylene Blue should be used to prevent fungus on the eggs. I wanted to know if it was safe to administer the Methylene Blue with the parents in the same tank and if the medication will alter the water parameters and destroy the beneficial bacteria (BB).

I realize that I may have to invest in a sponge filter, but it will take a while to get the BB in the filter to be of any good use. My concern is that the newly hatched fry might be sucked up by the filter. One Idea I have is to place nylon on the intake, and maybe this will prevent the small ones from being taken in. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks for taking the time to read this post and any help or advice would be welcomed and much appreciated!

I wouldnt put any chemicals in there. Since this is just your first time i suggest just let these eggs go and get a real breeding cone. I have seen many breeders keeping their tank as minimalistic as possible. Sponge filers are your friend when it comes to breeding set ups. 2 in a tank is good. Just keep up with water changes are necessary to keep the fish happy. Make sure the temp is right as well. Keep it simple. The more things you try to do, the more things can go wrong. If you indeed have a pair, losing eggs is not uncommon. Most new pairs do not have a successful first spawn. I know cuz its happened to me many times. Either they eat the eggs or they are just not fertile. My pair in this pic lost their eggs 2 days after but I'm not discouraged at all. I am more concerned about them being healthy and happy together. My female always lays eggs so I am not worried about her not laying eggs. Its a trial and error process and everyones results are different. So dont lose hope and dont over think things. Good luck.

Dont congratulate me yet guys lol
Fist spawn was not successful but last night they had another one. I screened the eggs this time to see if the results would be different. So far so good. They both seem to be attending to the eggs even though the screen is there.
