Just the quick back story:
Just over a week ago I brought home a proven pair of red turqs which I was told were about 10.5 months old or so. In the 8 (I think?) days since I've had them, they spawned twice (most recently earlier this evening). The pair ate all the eggs from the first spawn. Other than that I have not seen them eat anything. I offer beefheart flake, blackworm flake and frozen bloodworms. One fish seemed to try the bloodworm but spit it out and never went back for it. Other than that, they seem to have no appetite at all. I thought I was noticing a white spot and/or discoloration on both of their upper lips to begin with but since it didnt seem to change at all I figured it was their natural coloring. Now tonight I noticed that one of them has some white fuzz (fungus?) on the upper lip.

I was initially tempted to go for something like pimafix and melafix but was unsure if I should do so immediately or not. Any help is appreciated!

Problem

1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?

no appetite. white fuzzy lip.

2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).

fungus? on lip. white poop (not stringy; but white).

3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

none

Tank/Water

4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.

29 gallon. Just the pair of discus which are about 5-6 inches each. Tank has been setup for about 3 months but is running a canister filter from a 55 gallon tank setup for at least 6 months prior to that as well as sponge filters.

5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).

Daily (other than the days I noticed spawning) of 25%-50%+

6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?

3 months (with filter from tank running for 6 months prior). Bare bottom. I do keep a piece of driftwood that has anubias growing on it as well as a potted sword (in a clay pot....where they just spawned instead of on the breeding cone).

7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.

no

8. Parameters and water source;

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

- temp __80-82___

- ph ___7-7.2__

- ammonia reading __0__

- nitrite reading __0__

- nitrate reading _5-10 ppm___

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

straight tap

9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.

These two fish were placed into this tank 8 days ago.

The tank previously housed 2 other young discus for at least 6 months. About 2 weeks ago there were 4 other young discus in this tank as well (6 fish total) which were a recent purchase from a LFS that had been quarantined in a different tank for 2 weeks prior to that. I did about a 90% water change after removing those old inhabitants before adding this pair; but did nothing other than the large water change and possibly rinsing some filter media.

10. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.

Just keep the water pristine and uneaten food removed from the tank. Most likely this is just some cone cleaning damage, you just need to make sure it doesn't get any worse. If it does, acriflavin or furan-2 might be added. Do not use pima fix or melafix, they both are utterly useless.

Loss of appetite is not uncommon in breeding pairs. Keep offering them food however, just make it small amounts until their appetite resumes.

keep track of how many days apart the spawns are, if they are less than 4 days chances are your "pair" is two females.

Well that is very reassuring! Thanks; I do plan on keeping a real close eye on them and will continue with the large water changes and small feedings. I've heard they dont have much appetite while spawning; but figured they would be looking for food between spawns.

Besides cone cleaning; I've seen the tiniest bit of lip locking just yesterday. Could that also have anything to do with it?

The pair were sold to me as a proven pair; and their first spawn only resulted in about 10% of the eggs turning white. Based on that I'm pretty sure they are an actual pair.....but until I see some wigglers I honestly cant say for sure. I believe its been about 6 days (give or take 12 hours) between spawns.

As far as the acriflavin or furan-2; how does the dosing work and is that something I should already have available should the need for it arise? I'm assuming those are antibiotics? I'm so concerned to ever use those for fear of having a tank crash. I do already own maracyn and maracyn 2 I believe. Are the ones you mentioned a better choice (again only if the need should arise)?
