So just wanted to share a couple pics of my Wild Green/Wattley mix I got from Vern here in TO (Wild Royal Green male crossed with Wattley Turquoise female).

I got 8 juvi's from Vern on Feb 1st and tomorrow they will be 5 mths I think. (Vern sold them to me and I can't remember the age they were but I'll assume they were at least 2 mths as I got them at the 2 1/2" size).

First couple images are from when I first got them.

Last couple are from last night. Just eyeballing them they look to be in the 3 1/3" - 4" range.

Oh and don't mind the poo on the bottom I was going to clean the tank after LOL.

This is with 2 day WC and feeding my BH mix (bh, shrimp, white fish, green beans, banana, egg yolk) + tetra colour bits. Feed 2 times a day (morning and night)).

They are showing more and more colours as the weeks progress.

Anyway I'm just a working man so don't beat me up too much hahahah.

Ed. I'll have to update the images later.

I've been meaning to go see Vern for some time now and sure you got yourself some nice healthy discus.
I'm sure the pics will not do them justice.

I'll get the ones from Feb 1st, they look so small to now LOL. For me this was an experiment in buying decent/if not good quality discus from a good supplier and changing my husbandry skills. I see the benefits in upping the WC, although I sometimes go for 4 days without WC due to having 3 small kids and full time work, but that isn't the norm. I try to stick to the 2 day mark and do 90% changes and feed a good quality BH mix and I think it's worked up to now. Maybe the older discus keepers can comment.

From Feb 1st

They were a bit shy last night. I left them and stayed back and watched them explorer the tank. Only one out of the group was still hiding after half hour. This morning when I check on them, everyone was swimming happily around. Maybe tonight I'll turn the lights on and give them something to eat. Probably take some pics of them when they had a full meal and the Itis sets in.

So just wanted to drop a quick update on the new arrivals and the Wattley/Wild green mix

Things are progressing better than I expected and I can't believe the growth rates of with both groups. I'm trying to keep up with the WCing and it's paying off (in my eyes, I can't do more WC but maybe when they are ready to spawn we'll see).

The Stendker collection are a month and 1 day since I got them

Small update as I'm setting up the new F2 tank.

Growth seems to be normal I think, I'm still trying to keep up with the 2 -3 day water changing, but it's summer and I have to take the kids outside else they'll go crazy. Longest I went without WC is 4 days. When that happens, I end up changing all water in both tanks and starting fresh.

They were due to get a change lastnight but you know what happened there LOL

Wild Green's are coming along really well. I guess the experts can chime in and let me know what you think (but don't be too harsh remember kids and wife LOL)

The Silver PB's are doing great too, I have no issues with them and I like how round they are and the fin colours. They are really nice to watch.

Looking great so far! Did you split the silvers and tefe up to their own tanks? What size tanks are they in??

Thanks for documenting this all was cool to read... Gotta keep up on those WC!! Especially w growing fish!! Trust me I know all too well I have a 1 year old and a wife with one in the oven... I used to take your approach and unfortunately my fish suffered and I would spend 10x the time, effort and money to remedy the sick ones than I would ever do in a hour of a solid water change. Not to mention the stress and anxiety it would bring to me knowing it was my fault a fish was sick... My wife has come a long way in this hobby with me and she now knows and is on board with the water changea beat out playing fish doc any day!

Not picking on you or saying you are doing anything wrong at all! Hope you don't take it that way just saying I can relate 1000% as I am sure many of us here can and giving my own advice. It seems like you are doing an amazing job with them given their growth and how they look. I would be lying if I said things didn't come up and I didn't miss a WC here and there but it's no longer the norm...

Keep up the great work and documentation can't wait to see more!!!

Hey man I don't take anything personally. I can't do the daily wc thing and I pretty much have the 2 day 90% thing down and maybe once every other month I have a bad week. Comparing my past experiences to my present stock it's like night and day. All the discus are not showing any sign of anything and that's a complement to the breeders that supplied the stock. I used to go to an imported for my other discus and you know what, they always had something. One day their good the next day not eating. One week normal, the next worms. I almost packed it in, the only reason I stuck it out was bc of a blue diamond pair I had that were acting normal. And I think they're looking great for the age and eating like pigs. I can honestly say I'm enjoying the hobby because of these new ones.

Btw I sold the Tefe's to get the cuipeua batch yesterday. They were nice but I had a better opportunity with the new batch of wilds. Anyway off to wc now.

Hey Philly,

I have 8 of the Wild green in a 75 gal, 5 Silver PB in another 75 gal and the 6 Cuipeua F2's in the last 75 gal

I think that's why I can get away with the 2-3 day changes because of the stocking level atm.

Dragon,

First of... Where the hell are the pics of these Cuipeua's?? Or are you enjoying teasing me and the rest of us?? Hahaha!!

Thanks for all the info and the quick responses as well, this has been a fun thread and I can't wait to see more!

I would agree with you... You do have a small amount in a large tank so the levels probably never get to where my over stocked tanks do... Not to mention you are doing a pretty high turnover anyway, I think you said 90 every 2 days... given what you have on your plate at home, that is a great feat and no wonder you are having such success!

Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming!

Just a quick note today. Woke up this morning to do a quick WC and found 5 out of the group showing signs that they're ready to do the nasty. I'll try to take a vid and upload it but I'm pretty excited about them being ready or almost ready. By my calculations they're still sub adults, because in Feb they'll be 14 months I think.

So funny to watch them and my wife think I'm sick....Regular porn, fish porn...Same thing....

Thanks for the complements guys. Without the info from this site and some direction from the experienced guys here, I would not have had this much fun.

Almost a year ago I was close to packing it in and my wife convinced me to give it another try. So I sold all my stock and tanks, got a new setup and followed the information freely given here and the reset is history.

I think the one important thing to note is the quantity of WCing. I upped the WCing and the % of water I changed and that made a huge difference. All fish are healthy and doing great.

I hope to have more success within the next few months and hopefully I'll have a tank full of babies for the new year.

I'm glad you stuck around Dragon...
I remain in this hobby for the love of Discus in general and don't care whether they breed for re-sale.
I knew coming in that with this hobby money goes in and don't expect any returns from my investment.
Hopefully the interest expands here in Canada where it's nice to see your continued success with these grow-out groups.

Yeah Ralph,

I too love discus and I always thought that I was buying from a decent supplier. I was never in it for the money, I believe that eventually I'll have to sell the babies as I don't have space to have 300 or 400 fish around LOL. I think that was partly my problem, my stock was always sick and every 3 or 4 months I would lose 1 or 2 discus. Now, I have discus from good ppl that are in it for the love of having discus (yeah some money can be made from the hobby but not truck loads). Not to mention, they are really beautiful animals and it shows when the supplier takes some pride in the stock.

I'm happy that I went to Vern and he did give me some pointers/direction and it is paying off. I really didn't want to disappoint Vern TBH LOL. It sounds silly but how would it look if I called him and said I needed another batch of discus because the first batch died? Anyway it's all working out

Altum Nut and dragon1974 Guys all I am going to add to this is Vern is really helpful when it come to Discus. I got my first Discus in 1990 breed by him, they were Red Turquoise Discus. In those days he use to raise fry artificially. One never gets disappointed when dealing with him. Another thing I want to mention is when you truly love Discus then you always come back to it. I am going to stop by Vern sometime next week to pick up something that he is saving for me, I will pass him your regards.

Yeah, I do have 3 tanks going atm.

Only one is showing any signs of anything, I'm waiting for the 2 week mark to see if another one dies.

Yhea stendkers are real tanks... I do have issues with their shape as I'm not a fan of the water drop shape they develop latter in life, but they are hardy. I hear you on the difficulty of raising F1's, my previous experiences have been so...so.. Today I'm doing things differently i.e. wet dry's with UV, I feed them more, 5 times a day, and differently... much more varied diet. Plus I keep the temp up for the two years. The other thing is that I'm sticking to my grow-out regiment for 2.5-3 years from now on. I used to cut back on the feeding when they hit 14-15 months. Every one agrees that they can grow for more than 2 years, might as well feed them that way.

Cheers,

Last week I check in the morning and my SP tank was eating like pigs, so that night when I went to do a quick WC, I noticed one wasn't swimming right and by the time I finished my WC he really was tipping over and head standing.

Quickly took him out and placed him in a bucket with some Epsom salt, I suspected it was either bloat/swim bladder although I didn't see any swelling or anything. 2 days passed and I finally saw some tiny bumps in the stomach that looked like something stuck in there. The SP is trying to right itself and swim around but then just ends up at the bottom of the QT. He still breaths normal and it's eyes are clear and alert. Every time I go to take a look in, it swims up to the glass all be it upside down. Now it's been a few days, and finally seen some poop come out but it's slow going. Can someone tell me how long should I keep up the salt treatment and how long should it take to pass out?

I'll get some pics tonight

Such a nice thread. keep up the good work.

sorry about the recent trouble you have mentioned, I am sure it will be taken care off soon.

Quick question, are those regular 75 Gallon tanks?

Yes regular 75's. I'm hoping that he'll be ok. Last night I did another WC and while I was checking I realized that I left the heater unplugged for 2 days.....Ooohhhh Sh####t!!!. Anyway he's still trying to get upright so I did another bout of the salt treatment in hopes he pass whatever it is today. Tonight when I get home I'll check in on him.

Small update, finally my SP is looking back to his/her (it think its a boy) self. I stopped the salt/Epsom salt treatment when he didn't improve within 36 hours and opted for a Metro round. This week I believe is 2 weeks of daily WC and metro treatments every 2 days.

Pics to follow of before and after

Glad to hear that Silver Pigeon made a comeback.

Any pairing action happening with them ?
I think mine are mostly males as they never shown any interest to breed, Why I drop a known female the dominant ones are all courting her and pushing the smaller one away.
I'll most likely order some females to try to breed them. They are my wife favorite strain and she's letting me build a proper fishroom in the new house its an acceptable trade off ;)

Cheers,

Fred

I think I might be lucky and have 2 males and 3 females. I'm looking just to the body shape and fins but I could be wrong and we'll have to wait and see. I'm assuming this is also the reason that I have 1 sick fish as the others are grouped in pairs and that one is the 5th wheel. They are not showing any signs of breeding other than the pairing up. The wild green tank has more action as 2 of them are darker than all others and you know the fins are shaking like crazy. I see the alpha male (the biggest of out of the group) is taking one of the females off to corner her near the DW and 2 days ago I saw them pecking at it. We'll see, as I was sick for a couple weeks so I wasn't paying them close attention other than trying to keep up with Wcing.

I've reintroduced the sick SP back to the group and everything seems to be ok. I'll vid the tank and post it when I have time.

Sounds like you should have some eggs any time now. A bid or some pics would be cool. Would love to see the silver pigeons too
