Almost done with the rescape on my 125. Pulled all the gravel out replaced with sand and replanted. Here's a video and a few pics. I just ordered a piece of driftwood from manzinita-wood.com. I'll continue to update on this thread as the tank progresses. I took measurements on some of the fish as I moved them. I was surprised they were a bit bigger than I thought. The two checkerboard pix eons were around 5 1/8 the smallest fish was at 3 1/2

Thanks guys. Hopefully be getting the driftwood soon. Placed my order a couple days ago have notheard back yet. Im going to be ordering two more discus this month. Going with adults this time to try and keep the aggression to a minimum. The sand is so much easier to keep clean than the gravel I had in there before. The light colored sand has made the tank so much brighter and the fish have brightened up quite a bit.

Actually got a break today and sat down and enjoyed my tank for a while. The fish are really liking the new scape their colors have really brightened up. Still waiting on the new driftwood. Thought it be here this week. Hopefully tomorrow or early next week. Probably be a couple weeks before its soaked and treated. I have two new additions arriving a week from tomorrow from Kenny.

Yeah, I've got a few screws loose :P Seriously though, can't wait to see pics when you get the driftwood in!

Also, I thought you didn't have a background but it almost looks like you might. Is that right? Is it a weird reflection that I'm seeing or do you have a bed sheet or something on the back of the tank outside? Looking at your 2nd pic on first post of the thread. Only wondering because I'm playing around with different colored backgrounds. I have a black sheet on the back but it makes my fish dark (and yours really pop out which look great).

I bought a couple yards of fabric for a background. Couldn't make up my mind what I wanted. I've seen some nice looking 3d ones that go inside the tank but I didn't want to break the whole tank down to silicone it in. I feel the fabric looks decent it covers all of the plumbing and wires. Once the plants fill in and the driftwood is in I think it'll look good. Ordered the wood a week and a half ago it's coming from California ups ground hopefully it'll be here this week. I'm guessing it'll take a week or so to soak the wood. I'll update in a couple of weeks when I get the new fish and driftwood in there.

Forgot to say, I went with a light tan background. I have a lot of pigeon based fish and since I put the background on and replaced the dark gravel with pfs he fish have become much brighter and have lost almost all of their peppering

Sooo ups lost my driftwood without a trace. Apparently it just vanished in thin air. Luckily manzinita wood .com is going to send me out a new piece. After dealing with that fed ex screwed up my order of fish and now they are gonna be spending an extra day in a box. Thankfully Kenny puts great care I to his packing. He assured me they should arrive in good shape. So frustrating!!! I just hope my fish sho up in good shape. Been looking forward to getting these for a while.

I've had shipments of different things lost at least once by each UPS and USPS. I'm sure FedEx will someday do the same at least once. Sucks because that wood looked great but I'm sure the next will be just as good, Marc!

I hope so. I'm not as much worried about wood as I am the fish hopefully they are here first thing in the morning and in good health. The new piece I picked out I think looks a little nicer I might set it up a little different and hang it from the top of the tank like tree roots.

The fish will be good, Marc. Don't worry about them! I actually just got some new wood (chuckle... sorry...) from the lake I originally sourced for my 150. I put one piece in already (boiled in extra large pot under propane burner... then flipped the piece to boil the other half) in my tank and have one more to do the same. A new pair comprising of old pairs just decided to "sleep together" and spawn on the brand new piece. Didn't see that coming. Once I get the new piece in then I'll update/finalize my old thread with one last entry (not just for current pics but primarily for how my "experiment" turned out). Keep us updated with pics once you get the new piece and fish in, Marc!

Made a couple minor changes to the sump. Added egg crate to first chamber on top of bio balls so the foam sits level. And removed a couple inches of bio balls from the third chamber and added egg crate and foam to keep debris and snails from getting in the pump. New fish are doing good in qt. still waiting on driftwood.

Just added the new driftwood today I'll add a few pictures tonight. To much glare on the tank right now to get a decent pic.

A little background on the tank.
It was set up last December and has undergone a few rescapes since I'm happy with how it looks now and probably won't be changing anything for a while. My first venture into discus didn't go so well. My first fish were from Petco and I didn't qt anything. I ended up losing a few fish. I also had gravel in the tank that was way to hard to keep clean. I found this site and treated the fish and change pretty much everything. Water changes scape and filtration and also order some quality fish from Kenny. Since then everyone's been happy and healthy. My current water change schedule is usually 2 50% changes a week and most nights I siphon the poo off the bottom and change 5 gallons of water. My filtration is two fluval 406s and a 20l sump with refugium and a 36watt uv sterilizer. The sump flow is slow probably 2-250gph to make the refugi and uv more effective. The lights are the only thing that need upgrading there are 3 t8s and a small led the plants are doing ok but eventually I'm going to upgrade to full LEDs. Thanks to every one on this forum that has given me tips and help along the way.

Its a little astonishing to see what folks pay for manzanita driftwood. Where I live the stuff is everywhere. I probably throw $10,000 a day worth of the stuff out of my way in the course of a day at work.

It looks like they are starting with green wood that still has the reddish smooth outer layer. It takes time and effort to season it in that form. I just find a piece that has been dead for a while and after two hours of boiling it sinks, or nearly sinks.

You should start selling the stuff. All I have for hardwood out my way is oak. The branches are really straight. I thought about using it but didn't like the look.

For me one of the great things about this hobby is looking, and finding your own driftwood, im on my second rescape, and have some wood drying right now for almost 2 weeks that i might use to rescape one more time - Lighthouse

The driftwood can get pricey. It's definitely nice getting cool looking pieces and trying new scapes. I'm jealous of people that have lakes and streams near them with good sources of driftwood.

Past couple of days a few of my fish have stopped eating and the others aren't eating as aggressively as usual. I've been doing smaller wcs this week and did a 75% change last night. Half way through I noticed that the water was a bit murky so I looked in the aging barrel and there was some white stuff floating on the top and a whit film on the circulation pump. The fish have been shimmying and shaking once and a while. I scrubbed the barrel and put a new pump in and water was clear this morning. Doing a 75% now and another one tonight. I'm wondering if the water company sent something through or maybe it was from the pump I was using. Hopefully some fresh water straightens things out

I also changed the sump around. I removed the refugium and added more bio balls and once I get the fish healthy on top of bio media I'm going to have bags of purigen and carbon.

the 37 looks awesome crowded with plants! Big tank is screaming to become a biotope tank with tannins, more wood, some scattered leaf litter and a school of cardinals. Looks good really it does.

I was thinking of going the biotope look. Going to leave it as is and hopefully the discus make a turn around. Still not sure what is wrong with them. They do look better since I pulled the other fish out.

Forgot to say, I went with a light tan background. I have a lot of pigeon based fish and since I put the background on and replaced the dark gravel with pfs he fish have become much brighter and have lost almost all of their peppering

I'm a long time fish keeper but not discus. I hope to study discus in the coming months to see if I am prepared for 'em. Whats the meaning of "peppering"? When/why does it occur?

Peppering is black spots the fish get o oh pigeon based fish get it which are most of the orange and yellow colored fish. It is usually caused by stress to the fish from poor water quality or sickness. And dark substrate or back grounds can chase them to pepper.

How are you discus doing since the sickness started.

Things did not go well. Lost all but one fish. I e come to the conclusion that the fish got an internal infection from a bad batch of mysis shrimp. They all became very bloated. I started with large water changes every day with no improvement. I then started meds with no improvement. The two angels pulled through but the discus were a loss. It was a huge disappointment. I ende up breaking down the tank cleaning everything. I don't have the funds for adult discus or the time for juvies so I turned it into a south/Central American ciclid tank with the two angels and just got two small oscars two blue acaras and two fire mouths. Hopefully get back into discus in a year or two.

Wow, I'm sorry for your huge loss. I didn't think discus can die that quickly. I've got one I've been trying to get well for about 3 months now. Hope you can try keeping discus again in the future.

An update ony tank it's been a while. No longer have any discus. Assorted other cichlids and some cats. Tank has been up and running almost two months since I broke it down. I'll be removing some of the fish as they grow. One of the acaras is growing slow and the black Oscar is not turning out as nice as I thought it would.
