2016 NADA Discus Show-Chicago


Plans are underway for the 2016 NADA Discus Show. We’re proud to announce that the 2016 show will be hosted in Chicago at the Westin Lombard Hotel on July 7th – July 10th. Stayed tuned to this page for upcoming announcements and the opportunity to register to attend the show!

I checked out the hotel on line. I don't care about the room, I care about the food. The restaurants sound very good. Dottie cares about a fridge in the room. It pisses her off when there's not one. I see the rooms have a fridge. The bar says it stays open until closing (?). It needs to stay open until the wee hours for the drunks among us. I absolutely cannot wait!!!!!!!

This hotel has two awesome looking independent restaurants in it and the bar between them looks like it will fit the bill too. The first is the name sake of a person synonymous with Chicago, Harry Carey's. The name of the second cracks me up for a discus show...Holy Mackerel. Looked at the menus, food looked yummy and I didn't think the prices looked bad either. And that's from an accountant from Wisconsin.

Smaller ballroom style that can be divided into four. Great access to water, which the fish are happy about.

You want bbq you'll have to head to the south side for that.Just so people understand,this is a suburb of Chicago,but with great access.You can pop into the city or you could go north about 45 mins away to Great America and HUGE outlet shopping malls.

It's a 45 minute train ride from Lombard to downtown. I highly recommend the Metra train ride over driving, it's much more relaxing.

In 2010, I had been keeping discus for about a year and attended the first Show in Dallas. It was a great beginning for my discus hobby in so many ways!! While I learned a lot probably the best part was meeting so many great people in the hobby. I have relied on those friendships over the last 5 years and those hobbyist have been a big factor in my success. The first day I arrived I rode in John N's pick up to see his fish room and sitting in the front seat was one of my discus hero's, Dick Au. I wouldn't give up these Shows for the world.

1) Do you've to stay at the hotel? The wife will want to stay downtown.

2) Can you purchase discus and equipment at NADA? Need to know if I should start saving now.

Yes there will be speakers, there will be fish and other items to buy, You do not have to stay in the hotel, but I recommend you do. Some of the best times are sitting around after everything else is over and just talking fish. You will not be disappointed.

1). No you won't have to stay at the Westin Lombard, but it's highly suggested/encouraged. It's less than a 4 mile shuttle ride to the Metra station and 45 minute train ride to downtown. Great time to finish up plans for downtown as well as kick back at the end of the day. The group rates in Lombard will also be way cheaper than a comparable hotel downtown.

2). Many fish from the show are for sale, as are the tanks etc. they're displayed in, and there will be a lot of vendors/sponsors there as well.

3). Absolutely, Friday and Saturday will feature a lot of speakers including the boss here, Al. Should have several world class speakers.

You are right on that. I have said this before but this will be my last time serving as the NADA show chair. The local group has been doing great but after this one I am merely a consultant.....LOL. Like always this will be a great time.

I highly recommend making the show if at all possible. I do not have the words to really describe everything about a show. Its not just the show fish, its not just the speakers, its not just the chance to leave the house, it is the chance to talk fish, the chances to buy some out of this world fish, the chance to meet new friends that you will cherish for life. It really is the old and new friendships that make it such a great time.

Hey Skip, thanks for the positive comment.

While I need double hip replacement surgery at some point in time down the road, I do get by now, and could also get by in Chicago without a scooter, as long as didn't stray away from the hotel, and remembered to take anti-inflammatories & pain-killers if I did a lot of walking.

I wish that were my only problem, but unfortunately I also have a respiratory issue (early stage COPD) and another ailment which at times preclude me from enjoying a normal life.

Having said that, if I feel as good next year as I do just now, then I think everything would be just fine.
I just keep smiling & hope for the best.

P.S. No - I don't need to carry any oxygen around - not yet anyway.

Yes, we have negotiated a reduced price, however it is still a bit to far out to make reservation yet, motels only go so far.....Should have it set up to login and start booking at show rates within the next month.

Just booked our room can't wait to attend our first NADA show. Been in tropical fish for over 20 yrs but only into the wonderful world of discus a little over a year. Can't wait to meet everyone that has made our experience pleasurable.

Are you wondering about anything specific? Because I could go on and on. Numerous aquatic manufactures have been contacted about providing items for door prizes, raffles, and goodie bags...we've already received some awesome items. What I hope is a really fun show logo has been designed and has been given a big thumbs up by the powers that be. That's been incorporated into the trophies that our resident artistic expert and SD sponsor Ardan has worked and worked and worked on. Tanks etc. have been lined up. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things.

The classes for the 2016 NADA show are as follows:

Solid
Spotted
Thick Line
Thin Line
Wild
Open Pigeon Blood
Open Non-Pigeon Blood
Albino

In concerns to the following classes: Open PB, Open Non-PB, and Albino. Discus that qualify for these classes are not restricted to them. They are allowed to be show in any of the other classes that is appropriate for them. You simple get to choose the one that you think your fish will compete the best in.

We will also have our bred by exhibitor award. This is an award that spans across all of the classes and is given to the best discus that was bred, raised, and shown by the hobbyist exhibitor.

A very nice one located directly between the Holy Mackerel Restaurant and Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse. On top of that there's a Brewhouse just across from the complex entrance and a slew of other options. The hotel has 24 hour shuttle service as well.
