Miranda was my contact person at Chicago Discus. I saw these vertical striped tigers on the September stock list (with accompanying video) and took the plunge. I'm so glad I did! They are awesome! The fish were packed so well and active right out of the box. Now 1 week later they are eating everything and the colors are so vivid! 90011900129001390014Thank you Miranda!

Those Vertical Stripe Tigers are amazing. I keep telling folks about them, but it takes a very satisfied customer, like you Ted, to show them in their full glory! Great pictures! There are still plenty left, so just let me know if you want to add to your school of Tigers.... Miranda

I always like it when members post follow up pictures of discus that they have grown out. Here are my 6 vertical striped tigers that I got from Chicago Discus shortly after Labor Day. They were 3 to 3 1/2" when I got them. Maybe Miranda can chime in to let us know how old they are. I'm happy with their growth so far. The smallest is 4" and the largest is almost 5". I have changed 50% of the water every day except 2! I would change more to really get these guys big but with my python and 2 pumps ( one to drain and one to pump R/O water from a rubbermaid garbage can) it takes 30 min. I really envy hobbyists who have fish rooms with drilled tanks for draining and refill piping over their tanks! Maybe some day! Ted926819268292683926849268592686926879268892689

They are growing out very nicely Ted! And they look amazing in a school of 6. They were about 4 or 5 months old when you bought them back in September. With your daily water changes they should continue to grow nicely. Can't wait to see the next set of pics... Miranda

I now have a confirmed pair at age 8-9 months! A lot of water changes and food. This pair spawned in my 90g grow out tank and I moved the cone and pair to a 29g tank that I set up in anticipation. They were shaking and displaying but I did not expect this at such a young age! They immediately started fanning and caring for the spawn as if I hadn't moved them. They are still juvies! Hopefully they will attach, I will post follow up pictures. Their colors are stunning. The stripes are bright cardinal red. Thanks Chicago Discus! Ted9345193452

Oh WOW! They are so gorgeous and so fertile! Not unexpected though, I had other customers telling me that their Vertical Strip Tigers also spawned. That was just an amazingly fertile batch, and they matured very quickly. They are only about 9 months old. Can't wait to see the fry!

So all the fry were dead at the bottom of the tank near the cone this morning. I'm pretty sure it was my fault, the tank I moved them to wasn't properly set up and cycled. My water is PH 6.8-7 with TDS of 60ppm. I'm going to put a sponge from another tank in there next time. I have 3 questions for all you knowledgable discus breeders.

1) Do I continue 50% water changes while the eggs/fry develop?

2) Do I continue to feed the parents as much as I normally would?

3) Does a dark foam sponge filter act as an attractant to the fry possibly preventing them from attaching to the parents?

I know I will eventually get it right, this happens a lot from reading other posts. Ted

Yes

Yes and No. Many report that this happens and they cover the filter with white cheese cloth. Others claim that this is pointless as the fry will eventually find the parents. You will have to choose which advice you would like to follow.

we do 100% water change using the flushing method with aged water.

2) Do I continue to feed the parents as much as I normally would?

yes as long as your not feeding to much. we have stopped feeding them after the eggs hatch for a few days just to keep the water clean both ways work.

3) Does a dark foam sponge filter act as an attractant to the fry possibly preventing them from attaching to the parents?

no, thats a myth in my book. Fry staying on the bottom and not free swimming is usually young parents, week fry or to much movement in the water

Hope this helps........Josie

Finally, one year after obtaining these beautiful fish from Chicago Discus at 3-3 1/2" I'm cautiously optimistic! I have had multiple failures with the fry dying while still in the wriggler stage. This time I raised the TDS after hatching and the fry attached! The video is of the female with 10d old fry. This female is my best fish...great color, pattern and halo. Sorry about the sound, the U.S. Open is on TV, lol.

is the twitching normal?

LizStreithorst

IMHO it looks like the female is getting annoyed with them and wants the male to feed them for a while.

Chicago Discus

Yep, I agree. It hurts to have all those babies nipping at you! Be sure to feed them baby brine shrimp as often as possible (8 times a day or more). That will take some of the pressure off mama tiger. And where is papa? Congrats! ... Miranda

Dad is there, but is not in the video. They twitch when wanting to exchange the fry to the other parent. I'm new to the whole video thing and Youtube so it was just a quick experimental video posting for me.

Sadly, I have lost the fry. Both my wife and I work full time and I had trouble transitioning the fry to survive on their own. Too many feedings of brine shrimp required for me to succeed. If anyone has suggestions on how to feed fry after 3-4 days with busy work schedules, I would appreciate it. For now I'm gonna hold off until I retire in a few years.
