View Full Version : Egg Fertilized?

I have a blue scorpion female which has laid eggs twice in my 75g with 11 other discus. There is also a blue diamond who the first time stuck close to the blue scorpion so I had thought he was the male and they had paired up. Problem is I never saw him fertilize the eggs, although both times I was busy and wasn't watching like a hawk. The second time the blue diamond didn't seem to have as much interest. Both times the eggs have only lasted just over 24 hours which I assume is expected with so many other discus about. I've heard if the eggs aren't fertilized they will turn white but how long does that take? If the majority of them aren't white almost 24 hours later does that mean they were fertilized? Or can it take longer than that? I'm not planning on breeding right now as I would like to learn more about them first and I'm in my senior year of college so I don't think I really have the time. I would however like to try breeding them once I'm done with school and start working so it would be nice to know if I already had a breeding pair. Thanks!

It takes a couple days for all unfertilized eggs to turn white, so at this point the only thing you know for sure is that you have a female. The BD could be too young to fertilize them, just not with the program, or another female, no way to know at this point.

Here is a quick pic of the two of them during the first spawning, or maybe just egg laying.

Does your BD have a dorsal trailer? It's no guarantee, but I believe the couple male BDs I've have both had trailers.
