My son and his friends decided to mess around with my 55 gallon barrels in the backyard and cracked both somehow...do you guys think these would work just as well to age water in?

These will probably stretch once filled and it looks like they have small plastic feet at each corner. Those may crack up into the bottom once filled. I used to use rubbermaid totes similar to these but they had a flat bottom and they still stretched at the sides when filled. I'd look into a rugged trash can with a flat bottom.

Alright, thanks for the input Eddie. Think those wheeled trash cans would work?

I've used them before. Just make sure that the base is supporting all weight.

You want the heavier Rubbermaid ones. Rubbermaid also makes an extra cheap 50 gallon can with wheels that sags badly above the wheels when it gets about 2/3 full. I have one of these and if it wasn't propped up on that side with a couple of 2x4's it would collapse. It was about $34.

check your local craiglist for 55g drums. Search for "food grade barrel" and you should get some cheap hits.

What were the kids doing to those barrels though? lol

I have teenaged sons and a couple of trash cans full of bullet holes.

i found heavy duty trash cans but they are about 60 bucks. regular duty, i filled up, and well, i was expecting it to burst at seams.

i ended up finding white barrels
one was for car wash detergent, one had diesel exhaust cleaner in it on craigs list for about 15 bucks.

they are CRAZY strong, and cleaned up fine. look on CL

You can get away with the cheaper totes if you wrap duct tape all the way around into 3rds. I use 275gal IBCs to store, and 96gal garbage wheeled totes (clean) to heat my water.

+1 in addition, purchase some thermal wrap from Home Depot, the kind they use on Hotwater heaters, will help, when heating the water $$$

I use a food grade barrel from craigslist. They run about $15-$20ea around here.

Make sure it was used for food and not cleaning solutions (for a car wash). Mine was from a food company and had vinegar in it.

Had a friend using a cheap garbage can from home depot and it split a seam one day when he was at work. So be careful what you use.
