I took a year and a half break from keeping discus used to have a 75g with 8 discus. All of them happened to die one day so i kinda gave up on keeping discus for a while. I bought this tank from craigslist for $280 in the early spring. Running 2 canister filter a 200 and a 500w heater temp is at a steady 82. I just purchased 6 blue diamond tony tan discus they will be shipped to me at the end of october so im excited to be keeping discus again.
Heres what my tank looks like fyi i traded all 5 of my angels to my lfs today, all together i have 30 black skirt tetras 8 gold tetras 6 rasboras and a few cherry barbs and couple cory cats. Plants are all low light background plants are hygro polysperma and i have some java fern a bunch of anubias petite and nana some buces needle leaf java fern and bolbitis. Lights are 2 beamswork and 1 RGB leds hung above the tank.

Very beautiful and nicely done low light scape.
I also like your riparium look outside the tank.It makes the whole tank more natural.
The polysperma bushy hill is going to be a challenge to keep it clean though.
Good luck with your discus and keep us posted with info and pics when discus arrive.

well i got my 6 discus in they were a little smaller than what i expected but im still going to grow them out in my 125g as i have previous experience in my 75g. So this is what they look like now im doing wc every 2 days and feeding them brine, dried and flake blackworm, all of them are eating which is a good sign will keep this journal to show progress on their growth.

Great fish in a beautiful scape.
I hope you will grow them nice and won't have problems along the way,as you are already experienced .Good luck, and keep posting pictures more oftenly.

beautiful fish. they look much smaller than 3.5" in that huge tank. you have your work cut our growing them in a planted tank but keep up with your water changes and you might can manage it. Did you pay for 3.5" discus and get much smaller? if so I would be pretty pissed.

I misread they were 3in I'm not worried about growing them out in a planted tank they seem to be eating pretty well just gotta keep up on wc

I picked up a 3in red Scarlett so I have a totally 7 in my tank now. Was thinking of getting rid ofall the shoaling fish but it's gonna be a pain. All of the fishes are eating really well and they always beg for food whenever I approached the tank

Jack L
11-10-2015, 08:57 PM
are your shoaling fish black phantoms?
i like black phantoms, but i removed mine only because the were beating the baby Ds to food. i was actually considering a school of black neons

catching them out is easy w/ patience : )

11-10-2015, 11:46 PM

Jack L
11-11-2015, 11:55 PM
they look fine in there actually, huge tank, plenty of room if they aren't bothering the Ds i'd leave them

Never noticed before but though a non-rimmed tank wouldn't look good without a canopy but yours looks great. Also, it's natural to always want more discus but I like your judgement.

Yeah Hygro sunset and stargrass carpet

wow, i've never seen sunset so green. I kept in full co2 Hi-Tech and it grew like a weed, literally and was very red. The stargrass reminds me of Tropica 049. A very beautiful carpet plant IMHO. Great job.

Great planted scape Duce . The fish are looking good too , but I wonder if Mellon's can cope and grow their potential with the bigger blues you already have .

What's your WC and feeding routine so far?

du3ce
07-12-2016, 11:54 PM
40% x2 a week. I have a sump, I feed them Beefheart flakes frozen brine shrimp and tetra bits. I grew those blue diamonds from 2.5 in to where they are now

This is a perfect example that there are exceptions to every rule. That is a truly beautiful planted discus tank. With that said most would not have the time, knowledge or skill to maintain a tank like this. Very nice work

It looks very nice both ways. I like it better without the background but the cords and tubing are a bit distracting.

Yeah I'm hoping the stem plants will grow to hide the wires

Filip

It does look much better without the background IMO.
It looks more open and brighter than before , and it does have that Amano look :-) .
Don't change it :-) .

I really love how your tank has grown, it looked really nice to begin with, now its simply amazing. The discus are looking alot bigger and very nice shape also

i do like the overall lighter look of the tank, as opposed to a dark background. what about trying a white or even a frosted background, those stick-on sheets one can buy for windows might look nice and hide the tubing while the plants grow?

I agree I like the frosted idea. That's what I've been considering since also removing my black background. It's tough to get window film on though once the tank is close to the wall.

What I discovered works great is getting a sheet of the thinnest plastic from tap plastics. I had them cut it to the dimensions and it fit very snuggly between the upper and lower rim of tank. Was able to slide it all the way across from one side and have it stay in place hiding all wires and hoses

i added a blue background, thinking about adding some snow white or butterfly discus to get the blue red and white colors

The bare background Amano look still rules in my oppinion . The scape and the way plants were trimmed back than also looks more appealing . Plants and decor gave very nicely distinguished concave look of the scape .
Sorry if i discouraged you with my comment, just my pesonal taste here :) .
