Hello I was looking for some advise I have a 30 gallon tank with about 70 discus babies little over a month old they were doing great I stopped baby brine because they were getting bigger. Some of them do eat flakes or black worms. None of them will touch beef heart and I'm starting to notice some of them turning dark swimming toward the surface and stomachs all sunken in. If anyone can give me some advise on what's going on. Thank you
70 almost 1" fish in a 30 gallon seems like ALOT!
hope you are doing large daily water changes.. are you?

Are you feeding live blackworms?

With that many fish in that small a space you might want to up it to two 100% WC's a day.

What's the recommended size tank for thst many young ones. Also I could understand the waste if it's not enough water changes but there not eating many of them why is that. And can't even get them to touch beef heart

At this stage a 75 gallon. In another month they will need to be split into two 75 gallon tanks.

Thank you John and the cause of not eating?

Hard to say. My guess is the water. When they are that crowded it does not take long for it to crash.

It's crazy how I don't even over feed them and it could crash that much. It's not normal to have weaker ones in the batch?

In a healthy spawn the only ones that die at my place are the ones that I cull.

So you just think it's the tank size. Even though I seen people have success with one daily water change in 29-30 gallon tanks at my size of fish

Weaker ones yes, but fish that size turning dark and not aggressively eating is a big red flag. Continuing down the currently path will likely result in one of a couple things happening, none of them good. You may loose just enough, maybe half or so, so that your current WC routine and tank size will accommodate the remaining fish. The other thing that could happen is that you get them all sick enough that you end up loosing all or virtually all of the batch, and the remaining ones may be set back forever. I'd look strongly at John's tanks size/WC advice.

Now I'm being told it's a bacterial infection from another breeder.

That my be true but if it is, it is caused by the crowded tank and water conditions.

So what can I do to get them better until I can move them

John already suggested u do 2 x 100% water changes... Great start there...

That and you might try adding 2 heaping tablespoons of rock salt to the tank. Sometimes that will help. As you change water replace the salt.

If the dark ones do not turn around pretty quick with the increased water changes/tank move. Consider culling them so they do not crash the entire spawn. Plus if you medicate at this age it will set them back forever.

I prefer not to Medicate so recommend me moving all the dark ones and have the ones that seem okay left alone
