1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?

My discus started developing these holes on their side. I started noticing this with a red cover that I bought 5 months ago. There was never any other problem beside these holes so I didn't think too much of it, fish was eating normal, feces are normal, no strange behaviors that I can see. 2 months ago my altum flora male started developing them, and then the female during the time when I could only do water change once every 3-4 days. I did notice some white materials coming out of these holes, but then they disappeared after several water change. I thought it might have been secondary infection due to the reduced water change frequency (every 3-4 days, 70-80%). It's been months and these holes have not closed up.

2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).

Holes on the side, at one point had white spots coming out of it, then disappeared. Other than that, no other symptom or strange behavior.

3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

I have attempted Metronidazole 1.25 tsp for 100G of water (based on the recommendation of 1/4 tsp per 20gal), water changed 80-90% every day, for a duration of 7 days. It's been 11 days, nothing changed. No abnormal behaviors.

Tank/Water

4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.

90G with sump, 6 discus from 5.5-7", 4 - 3" angels, and rams.

5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).

Every two days 80%

6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?

Over a year, tank is bare bottom.

7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.

No.

8. Parameters and water source;

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

- temp __84F___

- ph __7.2___

- ammonia reading __0__

- nitrite reading __0__

- nitrate reading __~0__

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

- well water ____

- municipal water _x___

- RO water ____

9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.

Recently added 6 nickel size angels after the tank finished with metro treatment and the angels were QT'ed.

10. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.

Did the holes start developing after the intro of angles, or before? Also, do you run carbon in your filtration? Lastly, have you seen this thread?

Hello Rick, I added the angels a few days ago, the holes started to appear 2 months ago on my altum flora. It was first observed on the red cover 6 months ago.

I have seen that thread, my fish never had appetite problems and metro treatment didn't seem to do anything. :(

The only reason why your thread reminded me of that thread was because you said that some white stuff came out of the holes. That is similar to what Tom was experiencing and Al told him what it could possibly be. It looks like Al was right and gave Tom the right steps to recovery. Your case my be different, but it simply reminded me of it.
