but do any of you know where on board or have photos you could post of examples of short gill covers? i found lots of description, but not photo examples. thanks.

You won't find many from breeders as they are the ones that cull these typically. Hobbyist breeders sometimes will keep them. I know I had one in a batch of culls that I gave away locally. They aren't unhealthy, they just aren't good stock.
