I did make at least one mistake with this photo...didn't check my f-stop before taking the photo. :(

I love it Pat. Is that the lake we were at during our outing?

I was pretty sure, but the drastic difference in colour made me wonder. I'd frame that one.

I just realized you were wide open!

Here's the thing, with subjects such as this where it is super far away, you can open up your aperture, even wide open and it doesn't make that much of a difference. The subject is so far that even though you lock in focus on something super far away, everything behind it is still going to be relatively sharp because of the increase in DOF due to distance. Make sense? This is why a lot of astrophotographers will use their wide lens wide open and why lenses such as the 24 1.4 is popular amongst them.

Again, really beautiful shot. The colors are superb.

It does make sense and good it know. I think it is a lovely shot myself. Thanks Ricardo :)

Was this HH? Asking because of the SS. On a tripod no reason to up the ISO, and a long SS might add some nice softening to the water.
Play with some crops to try and get the horizon line a bit less in the middle.

Great shot and beautiful colors.

HH Stan? and yes, can try some different crops. Didn't use a tripod as had to rush to get the shots I got. Need to plan a bit more.

lol, I was merely translating what HH meant. Usually you'll ask HH or tripod. :)

Stan, a couple different crops. Hard to decide whether I like the water or sky best.

Took out some of the white spots from the far shore line also.

I like the top one more Pat. Pat, try this, do an aspect ratio crop that is similar or even longer than the bottom one, but on the top photo where it shows more sky than foreground but keeps the horizon off center.

I like more sky as well, to me it gives it more vastness. The bottom one makes me feel like I'm looking down and to me you miss out on the world doing that!

After thinking about it I agree Matt. The sky helps pull you into the picture.

yeah, that is really nice! I can see a canvas print out of that. The colors are just so rich!

I like both! The subject is the sunset, so more sky is the way I would go. The last crop is great.

The horizon line is something to keep in mind when you are shooting, especially if you have a foreground element that you don't want to crop out later.
In general it is more pleasing to the eye to keep the horizon line off center.
