If your not breeding them and they are not wild caught it is more important to be stable than what the PH # is.

Chicago water ph 7.8 to 8.+

Would that be the same in Australia

Your pH can be anywhere from 6.0 to 8.0 on the scale and it'll be just fine for discus, so long as it's relatively stable.

Hi Nicole.

Seriously watch the video I posted in your other thread.
https://youtu.be/VXe3VKh7qF8

It covers all the basics you need to know about keeping discus.

If it helps make it appear more legitimate, the presenter in the video is the owner of this forum, Simply Discus.

Jorg Stendker recommends 6.0-8.0
Higher then 8.1-8.4, he claims the discus doesn't feel well and higher then 8.5 (eventually he says) they will die.
Take it for what it's worth, many people here keep them in hire then 8.0, however I would suggest Mr.Stendker is subject to the world best aquatic experts and chemists.

Nicole just keep them in the same pH as your tap water, making sure that your pH of your tap is not lower than your tank water pH.Discus do not suffer any stress going from lower pH to higher pH but the reverse that is going from higher pH to lower pH has adverse effects on Discus even death in many cases.Aging your water for 24 hours helps to stabilize pH.

Nicole,
Discuspaul wrote a sticky here on SD, its as good as a book. There is a section on water quality that I'm sure will be helpful:
