My wife and I were at dinner when this happened . Security camera caught the event and quite a shock when we got home . Next 24 hours a little stressful...saving 10 discus, finding and moving 160 lb tanks , redoing plumbing for new tank , and returning discus to new home. All went well, no losses.

Holy crap!! That is terrible!!

Did the water level stay high enough that they were ok and that is how you saved them??

This has happened to me and it just plain blows... Sounds like everything was ok and you saved all...? Please update us and thanks for sharing...

There's nothing "near" about that disaster. That's a full-on bullseye.

I guess this answers the question "If an aquarium cracks in your home, but noone's home to hear it, does it make a sound?"

WOW, what the hell happened there. Was the tank unleveled or something? Did the floor buckle?

The leaking stopped with about 4" of water still in tank which kept the babies alive...stressed but alive. Plan to get them some counseling after this ordeal. No explanation for crack... Perfectly level and been on stand for about 15 years .

Was the tank unleveled or something?

My first thought, the other was did you happen to hit it with a decoration at one time?
Here is a prime example of why i do not put intakes as close to the bottom as some do ....just never know

I'm not sure which surprised me more, the explosive way the glass cracked or the fact it took a minute and a half for the dogs to start barking.

You've discovered a new way to drain a tank in a hurry !!

Seriously though, glad the fish made it, for being so unlucky, you were very lucky. These days almost all my tanks over 40 gallons are acrylic (one 40 gallon rimless glass cube) which helps me sleep a bit easier.

That was crazy. Sorry that happened to you, but nice job on saving the fish.

WOW...everyone's worst nightmare but glad you were able to save your Discus but sad clean-up I'm sure was a challenge.
I will consider Tom that you change your avatar name as it seems to fit the vid...Lol
I love that your security camera is directed to your Discus instead of front door.
Not quit the experience you had but I witnessed one of my tanks literally opening up at the side seal but managed to use bar clamps to avoid disaster and allowed time to drain.

That may be the piece of advice I've ever seen given on Simply.

That's so amazing I was about to show it to my wife... but you have brought me to my senses.

Oh my God...I got a knot in my stomach just watching the video!

This video has somewhat relieved me that I am not being too obsessed with protecting my future discus. My home security system has optional moisture sensors (most people use them to detect water heater flooding). If it senses water, the system will call you, text you, email you...whatever you want.

You got very lucky the water stopped at 4 inches! WHEW!!!

After a yearly complete cleaning of a 50 gal I put all the decor back into the tank and when it was just completely full of water the bottom just cracked into 4 pieces.
I went nuts because I lived on the second floor, I never drained that tank so fast and get all our towels.

Good thing it wasn't a bigger tank.

I am surprised fish did not kill themselves from the speed they swam at the walls of the tank...

that's just insane...
hope it all worked out and you still have the tank
