View Full Version : Who's coming to Chicago for NADA 2016?

Here is a graphical view of where folks are coming from for NADA 2016. Updating the map is a manual process but I'll try to get it done daily. If you shout out on this thread you've made hotel reservations it will be a good prompt for me to go out and review the hotel show database and update the map.

You MUST book as part of the NADA group to be sure you get our reduced room rate of $115 for 2 persons per room and be included on the map below. The easiest way to do that is using this link to the NADA show page http://discusnada.org/2016NADAdiscusshow/ or by going directly to the hotel reservation page for the NADA show. https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/events/start.action?id=1606206509&key=36E7F357 If you feel you have to call to make your reservation and get anything other than the $115 rate you have not been put in the NADA group.

The hotel reservation link above has been fixed.

As it says below, if your state or province isn't represented, you can fix that!!! Hope to see your marker on the map soon and see you in Lombard at the 2016 NADA show. If you have any questions on how to make a reservation or get a sold out message please contact me before proceeding so we get you in and at the best rate. It could save you over $100 a night!

I just want to let everyone know that not everyone who registered for the show has made their hotel reservations yet. We have show registrations from Washington State, British Columbia Canada, Bogota Columbia. Plus I have not made any of the reservations yet for any of the speakers.

Jim - our contract is listed as North American Discus Association and since I don't see you in our report I'm sure unfortunately the reservation folks didn't make the connection between that and NADA. I've talked with our rep this morning and she's going to get NADA added into their system so hopefully you'll be the last to run into this. I'll PM you to get yours sorted out.

This is so awesome, Thanks Keith!!

When Keith shared this with the Show Committee I thought it was a great idea but I really didn't have time to play with it. I didn't realize it was interactive and you could actually see who and where everyone is located. A few months ago I would have been listed just North of the other location shown in Ga. just North of Atlanta but we have a contract on our house and have started changing our address to Hillsboro, Ga in the Middle of the State. So here is another benefit of this map. If you are planning on driving to the Show the trip is much more enjoyable if shared with others. Look at the map and see who will be coming from the same direction as you and reach out to them. Maybe they are looking for someone to share the ride with. This map really makes that easy since you have everyone's name and location.

My balloon for Toronto is not posted yet but will soon and my wife is nagging me that she does not want me to drive alone. So as more locations are posted on map options may be open for hitch-hikers.

Dottie

Yup Dottie - nobody gets on my map without a bona fide NADA group hotel reservation. Unless of course they contact me and tell me they have a roomie.

A message to everyone - It's really important $ wise that you get in the group. I'm working with Jbell now to get their reservation switched over because they didn't actually get into the group and get our rate. The hotel gave them "the best available rate" at the time they booked which was $95 + tax higher a night than our group rate...dang near double. I'll be going back and amending the original post to try emphasize this, but thought it was worth mentioning here now too. You can go straight to the NADA show site webpage using this link http://discusnada.org/2016NADAdiscusshow/ or directly to the hotels for booking at our group rate using this one. https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/events/start.action?id=1510128820&key=27D074F2

Shoot, we already have 2 guys within 15 miles of the hotel spending multiple nights. You can drive daily, but you'll miss a lot of good times and information after the show closes for the night.

Maybe I'll figure out how to add folks not staying at the hotel later, but for now at least I'm keeping it simple for this map.

Running the hotels room reservation report is a little like going to the fishroom and looking for new batches of eggs. You never know what you're going to find and sometimes you're really pleasantly surprised. This morning not only did we have our first west coast state registrant, way to go Steve, but James registered too and became the current attendee located furthest to the east. I'm looking forward to a great time!

On Saturday morning there will be a speakers round table discussion with breakfast. I forget the cost of the breakfast but I highly recommend doing it. It really helps NADA. For those that do not know hotels generally make the bulk of their convention money on food. That means that NADA has to guarantee that out attendees will spend a certain dollar amount. We normally lose a fair bit of money on the banquet. We are trying to cure that problem by having 2 food events instead of one.......ALSO the Spirit of the Amazon is giving away a gift certificate to some lucky winner at the breakfast. If memory serves it is for $250.....

The memory didn't fail you for once John, the drawing for the gift certificate from Discus "r" Us is indeed for $250. The cost of the breakfast is $23 all in and here's a clip from the NADA show page that shows what it will include:

Breakfast Buffet and Roundtable Discussion:
Includes: Scrambled Eggs; Bacon and Sausage; Breakfast Potatoes; Orange Juice and Freshly Brewed Regular and Decaffeinated Coffee
Also Includes: Roundtable Discussion with all Scheduled Show Speakers!
And Includes: A drawing for a $250 gift certificate towards the purchase of discus from Discus "r" Us!

This is something totally new for a NADA show, but the speaker roundtable discussion should prove to be very interesting. Then of course there is that drawing for the gift certificate. :)

What keeps me up at night is the thought of running out of rooms. Our contract for the number of room nights we guaranteed and how many the hotel blocked for us was based on prior show attendance. The hotel is willing to give us more rooms as we find we need them if they're available, and we've already had to do that for Wednesday night, but the closer to the show date the less likely this is to being possible. Book early to avoid potential problems.

Big groups/conventions are a huge part of hotel revenue. When these events take place, there is certain amount of work that happens behind the scenes. Sales/banquets/housekeeping and others all have to do prep work for these type of events in anticipation. However, you always get a sense on how big an event is going to be based on forecasted numbers compared to actual books. This plays a major role in all outlets because if there seems to be a lackluster response compared to the forecast, they will focus on other things.

The flip side is that if books get higher than projections, the anticipation builds and more outlet managers get involved with the project.

So. Basically what I am trying to say is that if you know you will attend, try doing it sooner rather than later ;)

I don't think that you want me to tell your husband how much water I change every day. I easily go through 250 gallons. gallons. I'll tell him for a free beer, though. If you'd rather he not know, buy me 2 beers and I'll keep my mouth shut.

LizStreithorst

I'm working out all the details with Dottie. Taking show fish makes it harder. I'll take them in buckets as John suggested. I'll be spending the night at Dottie's. Unfortunately, Dottie doesn't trust her water. If she doesn't trust it I don't trust it. I suppose what I'll do is bring 2 10 gallon tanks for the fish to hang out in for half a day and a night. I guess I'll have to take 30 gallons of my own water with me along with heaters to bring it up to temp.

For whatever reason lots of people wait until the last minute to register. We are significantly ahead of the normal pace so I expect this to be the biggest NADA show ever.....it would be nice though if folks would go ahead and commit.....helps me sleep better.....LOL.

Rest easy John, I just registered. Already had hotel booked just dragged feet on registering like usual. I was actually going to wait longer but I knew you couldn't sleep.

Keith Perkins
04-03-2016, 04:00 PM
Yep, I'm the Nashvillian you just added! Yay! Your scare tactics worked on me - so I committed...! I thought I'd have to prepay the room, but all they wanted was the credit card to reserve. And it is cancelable (heaven forbid) up to the day of without penalty, so sign up already, everyone!! Also, I'll buy a drink for anyone who tells my husband while we are there that it is totally NORMAL to drain 55g everyday and refill it. That totally EVERYONE does it. :o

It isn't my intent to scare anyone Steph, sorry if I gave you that impression, It's just looking like this may be the largest NADA show ever and I really don't want to run into the situation where someone wants to come and we're out of rooms when it can easily be prevented. Booking your room early is the sure fire way to do this. You bring up a couple excellent points in that it doesn't cost anything to reserve your room now and also that you can cancel right up to the day of arrival if you should have to. Thanks!

John_Nicholson
04-04-2016, 08:15 AM
Thanks Matt. On the water changing deal...I go through roughly 650 gallons a night so draining a 55 seems perfectly fine with me...LOL.

All ladies welcome, even wives or girlfriends of the discus keeper in the family. I will collect names later, just before NADA, so we can reserve a place at the hotel for our "party". I'm considering bringing fish to the NADA show this summer, but I'm flying in and out. Has anyone ever tried to check a well-packed shipping box through the airlines with them? Otherwise I think I'd have to use FedEx and hold for pickup at the airport. I'm assuming I'd have to bring my own nets, bags, and other shipping supplies for the return trip packing. Is this what folks do? Will there be oxygen available?

John_Nicholson

Yes that is what people do most of the time. Check with your individual airline. Most will allow you to "ship" the fish on the same plane that you are on. If not then fedX is your friend.

I am yet to get my flight tickets. I keep looking at different areas to buy them for a cheaper rate.

However, one thing I do not know is, which airlines charge for the checked bags? If I could avoid extra "hidden" fees I'd be much happier about traveling in one of those.

The last time I was on an airplane was well over 16yrs ago, so I am not familiar with any of the "new" flight procedures and/or charges associated with flying. Could someone help me out?

I'd like to book sooner than later as the date approaches faster and faster and I don't want to pay a higher rate for waiting.

And Evan Jones adding a marker to Burke, VA yesterday put us over a huge milestone. Based on attendance of prior shows we requested and were guaranteed 150 discounted hotel room nights and we've used them all. Fortunately the hotel has graciously accommodated us and given us extra rooms but only until June 16th at 5 PM CDT. After that the $115 a night rate will be gone and you'll have to pay the full market price. Don't miss out on this great room rate and the biggest NADA show ever, make your reservations now!

The map is really looking great!! I don't think there is any question as to whether or not this will be the biggest and best NADA Show yet. Now for all of you that are on the map..................have you registered for the Show yet?? The map is based primarily on hotel registrations which everyone makes early so they won't miss out on the reduced rate and more importantly they are sure they will have a room. What we find though is that people procrastinate on actually registering for the Show. What's the rush after all, we surely aren't going to run out of room. Well here is the deal. It makes a really big difference from a planning perspective. Not everyone will stay at the hotel and not everyone at the hotel will actually register for the Show (spouses). This leaves us guessing at what the actual registration number will be. We need to be able to plan for how many seats are needed in the speaker rooms, how many goody bags are needed, how many t-shirts to order. We need your name to have a printed name tab and lanyard for you. So here is my request..............if you are planning on attending the GREATEST DISCUS SHOW in North America PLEASE go ahead and make your registration for the Show. It really does make a difference to those of us who are planning it for you.

Those of you that live in the Chicago area please let you friends and neighbors know that they can come by and see the fish for free. While we would love for everyone to register, ,and come and hear the speakers, or at least join NADA, one of our biggest goals at NADA is to get more people involved in the hobby. Holding these shows and showing off our discus helps accomplish that goal.

If you purchase Discus at NADA I assume two things:
1) They will hold the discus until Sunday.
2) They will box up the Discus for me when I leave.

I ask because I don't want to be in Chicago trying to track boxes to ship my new discus. Also I will be driving my discus home.

Thanks,
Tim

Yes, if you purchase discus at the Show they will be held till Sunday. Typically all Show fish will remain in the Show tanks till Sunday and possession is not taken till after the judging is done.If you plan on purchasing discus, if possible it would be best to bring a styro box with you. The vendors will have boxes that their Show fish arrive in but they aren't one to a box so they don't always have boxes available for every fish sold. They will be happy to bag them for you. A large number of us don't box our purchases so it usually works out. If you will be driving your fish home then I would suggest that there is a much better way to transport them. I will be bringing 5 gallon buckets with me. I will have a air pump that I will plug into a power invertor and air stones to go into each bucket. I don't worry about heaters. The water in the buckets will remain in the mid to upper 70's because that is the temp I will keep the car at and that temp will be just fine for the 12 hour drive. My longest drive transporting this way was coming back from the Austin Show. That was a 17 hour drive. We took fish out to the Show and returned with fish and no issues. I have been know to drive with the temp of the car in the 80's but have since learned that really isn't necessary, lol.

Thanks Larry!

I do have one large styro box I could bring. Luckily for me Chicago to home is only about 5 hours!

Thanks!

This question may have already been asked, but I can't find any discussion on it. Will there be any organized activities on Saturday for spouses who don't want to sit in on discus lectures all day?

thanks, -Don

I don't think anything has been set up yet Don. John's wife and daughter plan on finding the PPV UFC fight being shown somewhere Saturday night...I kid you not. Maybe we could get them or a couple of the male spouses to lead a trip to some of the local attractions on Saturday. There is the mall and IMAX theater right next door for the less adventurous.

Well the map looks a lot different again today with our first European marker. France to be more precise. Welcome to Pierre Barbez.

Welcome to the map Nanette Wenum, our second marker in Colorado.

Still several "nearby" states to the show not represented, it's not too late. You've got until the end of the month to make your hotel reservations for one of the best discus times you'll ever have.

Keith, I am assuming you have reached your "mile marker"?

I've been past it twice but we had a cancellation or two and an individual that inadvertently triple booked 3 nights that inflated our numbers which just got corrected this morning. Scratch just about any one of those things and we'd be there. We're close, oh so close. We just need a couple more people to come to the show and make hotel reservations.

As Ardan said earlier, this is feeling like Xmas - there's a certain edginess to the membership anticipation here, that I've not seen before in 3 previous prep times for a bi-annual Nada get-together. Seems like it's looked upon to be quite a big deal - one that (hopefully) will be tremendously enjoyed by all attendees !

Our discounted rate was scheduled to end at 5 but may still be good until midnight. I have held a couple rooms for Friday and Saturday night if you change your mind to come at the last minute. Contact me by PM and I can help arrange it for you. I'll need to cancel these held rooms shortly after noon on Thursday and Friday. Hope to see you at the show.

Hi Keith, I registered (and paid via PayPal) about a month ago, but I have never received any kind of confirmation from NADA. Do I just show up and give my name and identification?? Or should I have gotten a confirmation email or something??? Please let me know .
Thank you.

Registration is only to see the speakers, anyone can just come in and view fish.

Ps - this may be my last time on Simply for a while. Need to be out of here in a couple hours and there are still things on the list to do.

I am getting to Chicago on Thursday and going straight to a Cubs game at 7pm that day with my brother. It shows thunderstorms in the weather. How bad are we talking here? Should I take a full on jacket or heavy sweater is fine? I'll be under a pavilion mind you

 well, a sweater will keep me warm under a pavilion. I don't think I'd have the luggage space to take a full on jacket but could buy one over there I suppose. Its a moot point really, we are going anyways, rain or shine so I'll enjoy it one way or another. Thanks :)
