I started this in the breeding section in case anyone didn't want to add any negative critiques in my sub forum.

Blue pigeons
eggs layed 2/17
hatched 2/19
free swimming 2/22
I feed the fry brine shrimp 2x a day, started about day 4 free swimming and now I add some pellet food after I put it through a pepper grinder.
50-80% waterchanges every morning and every evening
Pictures were taken 3/7, so 14 days old

Any feedback is welcome. There is one 'slider' and a few that are pretty small compared to the others. Maybe 85 total fry.

I never get tired of looking at pics of parents and fry. Simply amazing! You have a lot of fry to raise and a lot of water changes to do.

The parents and fry look happy and the bellies are full on the fry. Well done. :)

Very nice fish! You make it difficult for me again in my choice between Stendker red turquoise and brilliant turquoise…:p

Thanks all for the compliments!!!

I will try to keep this thread updated weekly. Fry are a lot of work.

I think I am seeing more sliders, of the Blue Pigeons.... not sure if it is just what happens around this time or somethings else. Maybe five so far. hmm

Looking great. Congratulations! I hope my blue pigeons look as nice as yours when they get bigger. They seem to be breeding all around the same time. Is that normal?

The sliders don't recover.If you haven't already,you should cull.

I'll get rid of them with the next waterchange, I don't have any issues culling.

Is there anything that causes sliders that I can do, or not do?
I've been reading it is from swimbladder not inflating.

But I can't find if this is genetic, early stage environmental or if there is something I should be doing now?

Do you use meth blue? Some put it on the eggs to try and keep away fungus, read an article it can contribute if not totally removed by the time the wigglers are poping off the cone.I haven't used it in years and I still get some belly sliders, but not as many.

I just use RO water to get them to lay and hatch then back to tap. If you get some too I won't worry too much and just cull what I see.

Thanks

I culled 7 or so, some belly sliders and some just swimming funny. Swim straight up up up then sort of float back down.

At the very least it is a relief not to have any questionable fish in the group in terms of health. I know there is still one with a goofy dorsal fin and a couple runts but I will get those in a week or so when I move them to a larger tank.

For the Brilliants I removed the male. He separated himself from the female and the fry. Every so often he would dash at her, she would dash back at him, the fry would scatter and the fry would all reattach to her in a corner of the tank. If he got close she would appear 'aggresive'?

I moved both spawns to a 65 gallon tank. This weekend starts the "big cull'
Most of the Brilliants have deformed dorsal fins, i'm guessing some early bacteria problem?? Maybe 5 are okay so I will keep those and see how the do.
I will also cull any all blue pigeons I don't like the looks of.

They are still getting bbs 2x a day, some are taking .5mm pellets, and all are getting crushed up brine shrimp flake(just because I had this flake on hand).
80-90% waterchanges 2x a day

This morning I plan to add beef before waterchanges.

I figure at 1 month I will stop the bbs and flake. I will feed pellet, live whiteworms and beef. 1 waterchange of 90% after feeding the beef.
