Is $2.19 per pound of frozen beef heart a good deal?

The beef heart comes whole and is trimmed. It is also frozen already. Is it okay to buy it frozen, thaw, process, then refreeze?

I freeze and thaw beef heart all the time. I find trimming off fat is much easier on semi-frozen heart than a fresh one.As for price $2.19 per pound sound quite reasonable.

Thanks. Should be way cheaper and healthier than buying san fran 3.5oz cube packs?

Prob a dumb question, but my aunt gave me one of her old school meat grinders. Its the old cast iron one with a wooden handle. The stamp on it says made in 1899. Is this safe for food that will be put in an aquarium?

Old school manual meat grinder still gets used in our family and actually used it last week for our yearly traditional sausage making.

Sure that price is fine, especially trimmed. Once you add various other ingredients, it's like hamburger helper, you'll end up with a whole lot for not that much. I've gone over to turkey heart, easier to work with.

Considering I paid 10$/lb in Ct. I think 2. 19 seems pretty reasonable to me. I think! LOL.

Where have you guys found beef heart for sale? I haven't been able to find any in the major grocers locally. Haven't tried any of the smaller places yet.

Also, is there a specific reason beef heart is used? Does it need to be the heart, or would other meat work as well? And is there any benefit to it being a beef heart or would poultry heart work as well?

And finally what about pathogens? Could discus be affected by salmonella etc from raw meat?

Veal heart will work too

http://smithmeats.com/contact.html You can buy beef heart here. Best if you place your order in advance, but you can walk in too. Use google maps carefully to find this place.

No pathogens if you get it at smiths. Beef heart is the cheapest food by far you can feed that has this much protein and so little fat. It also is one of the best foods.

Final got and process most of a beef heart. Before I started I took 5 once a day men's vitamins and palced them in my 1100W Ninja blender with a little bit of water and blended. Added a table spoon of powdered garlic and blended some more. I left it soaking there for further blending later.

Trimmed and ran the good parts through my meat grinder. Before doing most of the heart I decided to toss a few pieces in the tank to make sure they'd eat it and it was gone before I could make it back around the corner. Still got the part with what looks like where the artery was? Plenty of meat to get off it but wanted to ask you guys and gals if it was okay to use that meat? My trimming skills suck but from like maybe 60% of the heart I processed I got 14oz of meat. No fat. Here is what I did next.

I made 2 plastic bags with 5oz of meat each. 2 teaspoons of my vitamin/garlic mix per bag. Mixed very well then laid in freezer on side to let it freeze into a sheet close to the thickness of the cubes from san fran. The remaining 4oz I put in the blender with 1 tablespoon of the vitamin/garlic mix and added a tiny bit of water to allow blending. Added to a plastic bag and freeze. I hope this bag to work as food for the fry. Maybe the rest of the beef heart i'll make it into one bag with about 80% beef heart through only the grinder, and 20% beef heart blended in the Ninja. This way fry and parents can eat together?

Any input on my mix or advise for next time?

Trim all fat, veins and sinews, just use very lean beef heart.I find it easier to trim frozen beef heart. If your fish eat what you have made than stick to it.Lots of other ingredients like fish, shrimps and liver can be added to the mix.

Yep, I also removed the outside of the beef heart. The waxy looking skin.

The fry love the blended stuff and the adults like their grind mix. Its rather funny seeing the fry try to eat the grind mix.

Wow that is a lot of fat! The one I bought had hardly any fat on it. btw, you may want to remove the fat on the cubes. Veins or whatever it is, but you should only have a nice deep red meat?

Wow, I though I had it bad. I pay about $10 per kilo for Kuyshu beef heard here in Japan. It is really nice stuff though, and we often cook up a bit for ourselves too.

I know the states is changing, but last time I was there butchers in some of the bigger grocerry stores can get you beef heart if you just ask, as well as other goodies.
I used to always get a bucket of bulk salmon patte, and a bucket of bulk cream cheese and make my own salmon cream cheese before it became so popular.

Wow that is a lot of fat! I have this theory that the heavier (older) hearts have more fat and are more tough. Next time I will buy more smaller/lighter hearts to cut up.

Oh, my butcher charges $1/lb and I do the trimming......

How close are yours to a golden retriever? Here is a photo of ours, 'my son's dog.' She is nearing a year old and is still rather small. She is nearing the size of a lab. The breeder said she was the runt, I think she said that, but her demeanor and the test I put her through made her the best choice for our son. These dogs are so smart, kind, and tolerant of kids. It's also a blast watching her try to herd our son around the house by following his heels. BTW, does your dogs think they're lapdogs?

Well, while we are on the topic of posting pics of our dogs, this is my new puppy. AKC German Shepherd Dog, only 4 weeks old, he is still with his mother but will be coming home to my family in a couple more weeks.

I agree, I think 8 weeks is kinda the minimum. I told the folks I'm adopting him from that I'd like to pick him up last after all his litter mates are gone. I think a puppy should have as much time as possible with the other pups to learn a little bit of manners etc. especially since he'll be an only dog in my family and he'll have a very hyper 2 year old that he'll have to put up with :)
