View Full Version : NADA Rack Build Date

As was discussed at the last MWDA gathering we're going to be building the racks for the NADA show at Wes' place closer to the show date. His address is 693 Kensington Way, Bolingbrook and you can PM him for his phone number if you want it. The dates Wes has suggested for the build are either Saturday June 4 or the following week on the 11th. We didn't talk about a start time, but I'll throw out a 9 o'clock start time for a discussion point. I know these dates are a ways off yet but thought I'd put it out there now in case you already know of an absolute conflict. Personally the 4th would work slightly better for me, but it doesn't matter all that much. As I'm writing this listening to the rain pounding down the thought occurred to me that maybe we could plan on the build happening on the 4th and using the 11th as a rain date. Looking for every ones thoughts. Here's who I have listed as being interested in helping with the build:

Ardan
Bill
Jeff
Josh
Josie
Keith

A bit of advice......be sure to check with the tank supplier to get the correct size of the tanks...lol...trust me it will help.

Already went to the store John and found one of their 20Hs and measured it myself. Their website dimensions were correct by the way. :)

Also remember you have to have a little extra room for the cords.

And think about some center support or diagonal bracing if the span is a good length or its shoddy wood lol. Save me and John a trip to Lowes ;) ;)

Thought that I would check in with the build crew. Lunch will be brats and Italian sausage, baked beans and coleslaw. I will have regular- diet soda and water. Bring your swim suits if you want to cool off. I think Keith suggested 9 am which is good for me.

A leg every 4 feet when all bolted together it will be a very even distribution of weight.

if you place tanks starting from the end, essentially you will have the weight of 4 tanks in between two legs. My concern is when this happens in the section where two tables are bolted together, the weight will mostly be distributed across those bolts. This is your weakest link.

I was thinking the same. Seeing that legs are folding...can they be secured at the ends just like any picnic table and then add a single support in between when setting up racks. Then bolting rack end together will not be an issue.

The legs aren't really folding Ralph. They're being bolted per John's diagram, the only difference is that rather than completely disassembling them for transport we're leaving one loosened bolt in and using it as a pivot point. This will save us time putting one bolt back in, but more importantly save us time finding the right leg for the right spot. Actually I plan to use a template so all the bolt holes are in the same spot on all the legs, but still it's one less thing to go wrong.

I agree with the legs at the end of each row, we'll probably push those out a foot.

I guess its better to have 6 tanks between the legs. I will drive my f150 over a couple bolted together to test the strength.

I have no doubt that with distributed weight these racks will hold up your f150. However, I believe what others are trying to say is that if during setup, someone starts loading up the tanks on either side of the rack (left or right), then you do not have even weight distribution as you are setting them up. I assume you will have a lot of hands on deck that day and mistakes happen. It is better to address that weak point now and not chance it that everyone will start from the middle out. Peace of mind and all.

If it wasn't for the rain, it would have been a perfect day. The help was good, and Wes did a great job getting supplies, setting things up for the day, and the food was awesome. Even had just enough extra lumber to handle the curve ball I tossed out after lunch.

Its 18 by 30, so I thought big enough if we were putting on a guppy show but not for a NADA show. We had a couple extra 2x4s so I used the casters from the little dolly and supersized it 38 by 48.
