Today, I noticed some white stuff in the waste ,just to be caution, I picked it up to have a closer look to make sure it's not worm or whatnot. I found out it was actually a sand covered by the poop (sand in the center with the poop surrounded it). There were about 5 of them in the tank. I assume that indicated the Discus has been eating the sand (I know it was the Discus becuase I just saw it coming out from him). Is it a normal behavior? Would it cause any harm to the fish? the sand i am using is reef sand, which is about 0.5mm thick.

If you ate your food in a sand box, you would have sand in your poop too.

Not to worry, Discus have evolved to work with sand in their systems as they come from sandy bottom environments in nature as opposed to bare bottom glass tanks.

It's probably a good source of roughage, though that's only a guess.
