I'm needing some advice on what to do with a 180 that is not drilled. I'm getting the tank from a family friend who bought it new 3 years ago for African Cichlids. It currently had two fx6 filters with it that were bought with the tank. I would like to have about 8 adult discus in there once setup. I know sumps are much better when it comes to larger tanks. Any ideas of what I should do? Should I keep the fx6 or use canisters in general? Should I use a hob overflow? Is it really safe? My goal is to have something relatively quiet but ultimately safe. I'm nervous having a 180 since its a lot of water that can flood my house. I also have an eheim 2217 and ac110 hanging around if needed.

Any good fail safe or or close to it options? I thought about drilling it but I don't feel comfortable doing it and taking the chance. Also worried it would weaken the tank structure wise.

I've never owned a tank this big so filtration for it has been confusing and intimidating. The biggest fear is having a destructive flood.

As long as the tank doesn't leak, I would use the two FX6 that came with it. You can always adjust the return flow of water. If you don't want to drill the tank (which I don't see the need for it), you can use on top of the tank sump, simple set up easy to maintain and clean.

If do want to drill and still want to have a sump, you can use overflow boxes like PF-1200 from Eshopp, Contact them for an appropriate size

If you care to go with with an sump and not drill the tank, I highly recommend an Lifereef Pre-filter system from Lifereef.com. Have one on my 125G tank almost 2 yrs. now without any problems. Check video:https://youtu.be/5KrnCbZgNxk
