This one is for Pat,Matt, and Ricardo predominantly...though we could open it up to anyone. Its an offshoot of an old film challenge.

1 roll of film....so either 12 shots or 36 shots per person... no stacking or stitching.Minimal processing. Just straight up compose and click.

Could be a fun challenge, largely would be the honor system but camera data probably can help keep us honest.

Always Al, So in-camera cropping? We could post the photo straight out of the camera along with the "Minimal processed" photo. I do not know how to stack or stitch so no issues there. Ricardo has challenged me to do in-camera cropping so be doing some of this already. Here's an example. This is straight out of the camera and taken at Bok Tower. Minimal processing would just be to lighten it a little.

Like I just got in from outside, literally filled up a 16GB card with photos of 2 flowers. Granted I do shoot Raw + JPEG and am doing stacking :D but still! (Pics of said flowers will hopefully be up tonight.)

I think this will be fun and challenging. I have mostly been shooting in manual lately but still developing a feel for SS and ISO in various situations. Perhaps might be best to better define "minimal processing". :D

I am game for this too Al. It could show that photo savvy folks are pretty human also. You might want to define the PP suggested/allowed? I tend to adjust for highlights/shadows/whites/blacks and sometimes exposure and a bit of noise reduction. No cropping/localized editing or whatever you feel is appropriate. Personally I am not in this from a competition standpoint but for a planning/self improvement moment.

If your current shutter count is currently 1,000 , then the next 12 shots 1,000-1,012 will be your participating set.

You cannot use anything prior to 1,000 or after 1,012 even if you mess up.

That's it! I added a challenge on top of this challenge in that I was going to only take one shot of any specific subject.

For example, if you wanted to, you could use your whole 12 shots to take pics of one subject. My goal is to have 12 separate subjects, even if I mess up on one specific one.

Ricardo, when you say specific subject you are referring a group of similar subjects like flowers etc.

I went to start this morning with a particular subject in mind, took the shot and a huge bee got in the way and I blew my series. :p So reset and took two of my planned shots after returning to the house and grabbing the tripod. :)

You have to understand that the guidelines for this challenge is not an easy one. I am basing my judgement of these with that in mind because it isn't easy to simply point a camera at something, get exposure and only take one shot and move on. For that alone, you deserve a lot of credit. Can they be improved? Absolutely, had you taken a few more of some of them and I believe they may have been better, but you have done a great job here already.

When I was referring to a gallery, I mean to do something like this:

That is what we call thumbnail galleries at Dyxum. It helps show your whole set as a whole. Give it a shot after you have completed your 12 :)

You can pre-chimp, just look at your exposure metering :)

remember, you have wide/matrix/spot...so you can dial in exposure very accurately with these.

Its definetly not an easy challenge. I finally got out today after being tied up the last few days. Its crummy here...drizzle and cloudy.. I spent the whole morning walking around the yard looking for interesting things.>> i settled on mostly macros..I'm using my K3 with 100 mm 2.8 macro...hand held

Are we doing out of the camera no editting or PP at all or are we doing minimal editting and PP ?

Just moved this here..

As you can see the forum admins and mods have been busy with a bit of a photography challenge. :)


I officially invite anyone else here to join. Its a fun little competition of sorts. It takes a bit of bravery on the part the photographer as you get to see the good,the bad and the ugly in their work. Get to see the creative process in action..not just the final best image out of many.

Its actually quite a humbling endeavor! Or it was for me! Looking back at my shots...I definitely had some...." man that stunk "shots! But i got a better appreciation of my limitations and a much better understanding of my gear.Whats the saying? You learn more from your failures than your successes?

I also got quite a few that I really liked.

Alright, here is my full set of twelve. You will note a break in the file number on the last four. I took all twelve on the same card but removed the card from the camera to work on another little project. I did not realize the camera does not keep the numbers sequential based on the card :(. Lesson learned. We can call this set null and void if you like. Number DSC_1424 was a bust. Fat fingered the SS. :p

I took 9 or 10 pics today (can't remember). Had 1 dud where I missed focus in low light and reshot and I did a retake on another but all in all, I like the set as is. I still need 2 (or 3) shots left and I'll try to finish that up by tomorrow. Very fun little project. I tried to do everything in camera so I will post SOC (Straight Out of Camera) shots. I hope my WB was set to daylight...haha

Very fun challenge. Had 2 duds, actually, I would probably say 3 duds. These are all SOC shots and no PP or WB adjustments were made. I would have normally fixed a few of these, especially the Galaxie shot and probably the tools shot.

Nice set Ricardo. I was thinking of doing a composition with my old film camera but did the lily pad flower instead. This is not an easy challenge, really makes you think about you are shooting.

I really liked the set and that you didn't Post process them at all. Would mind taking them and Now hit them with Post processing for Comparison?

Will try PP on a few of these later today. There's really only 2 that I can think of that I would only bump the exposure up, but I'll let you guys be the judge of which is best :)
