Hey guys, looking for comments/suggestions on this. Have another competition coming in up in June and the theme is storytelling. Sort of at a lost on this but here is a maybe idea. Could be titled "Out of Place" and show the encroachment of suburban live into rural areas.

So playing with this a bit and un-sat the horse and rider a bit. Trying to make the horse and rider look ghostly...like a reflection from the past.

It doesn't quite work for me Pat. Like I said via text, I think you have the concept down cold on this one, but the execution is a bit lacking. This shot doesn't scream "encroachment of suburban life into rural areas" simply because of how vibrant she is dressed and how she is dressed as well. She doesn't seem rural to me in the picture. Personally I would say keep trying.

Need a dusty, dirty ranch hand Ricardo? And I'm fully agreeing with you.

Yeah, possibly and the backdrop may be an urban city or something. That is to go with your idea/theme/vision here.

I will need to do something different.

Again Amazon on horse Pat :)
I agree with Ricardo. I have comment to frame also. I prefer Aurelia and horse more on first plan. I wonder about houses under Aurelia head, to show her as nobly above everything. Not sure, but you can try.

Thank Darcon, I have decided to do something different as I do not have the skills (or means) to do what Ricardo suggest...so stay tuned.

I agree, just not working for me personally. This is a tough category for me. Not sure how close they are living but perhaps an older relative with a younger relative close by looking up at them? Maybe it's a bit to literal. Perhaps just the face of a older person that shows their work on their face in B&W? Maybe something to do with the hands of the farmer so to speak. The face of a person really can be impactful for storytelling. Think of the iconic Steve Jobs photo with his hand up to his chin and the almost determined scowl on his face or "Afghan Girl" that is one of the most popular National Geographic covers ever.

Maybe something still life, an old open book with reading glasses on it and a glass of wine beside it. Or baking materials spread on the counter. Something that may give you fond memories as a child or adult that you are trying to put into a visual context for us that were not there.

Just my opinions!

Thanks Matt, it is a tough one for me also. One of the members of the local camera club posted one of his pictures in the storytelling category and it was a photo of an empty chair with a flower on the seat in a bed of colorful leaves. The shot was taken at ground level and was a gorgeous shot. So this shot gave me an idea of instead of an empty chair to use an empty saddle.

I have an 1880's antique saddle (actually the tree is 1880s and the leather has been replaced/restored) which I will place on Bucky and position him next a tree with the lake in the background and a pair of dusty cowboy boot in the foreground. If I want additional impact I could place a person in the background overlooking the lake. Anyway something to play with over the next week or so.

Place the boots by the lake as well as some strewn about clothing as if someone just jumped in the lake. Make it a B&W or sepia and BAM, you got a story on your hands!
