View Full Version : When to move QT Fish back?

Hello. My question is when do I move my quarantined discus back to the main tank? Here are the circumstances:

- I got my first 6 (3") discus 5 weeks ago. There were issues with potential hex / parasites when I brought them home. They were initially put into a planted tank, which exacerbated the issues. Within the first week (and with much guidance from the beginner stickies) I got them into a discus only tank, much better suited for grow out (along with improvements such as water aging, prefilter, daily 70% wc's).
- Lots of clean water and metro/prazi helped a lot, but the little one was still struggling (no eating, white poop, hiding all day) so I put him into QT to isolate him from the others
- Al (brewmaster) kindly spoke with me by phone for a 1/2 hour and gave me much sage advice. He thought the little guy may be suffering from a secondary internal bacterial infection and advised using kanamycin with metro. Within two days the QT fish was eating (first time in 4 weeks). I completed a 6 day treatment, he is eating well, eyes have cleared, exploring the tank like never before. He is not a voracious eater, but almost all food is gone within a half hour. Poop has gone from white and stringy to orange and lumpy (he mostly eats orange colored flakes).
- After two days of the kana/metro treatment in QT and seeing the improvements, I decided to also treat my main tank with kana/metro as two of the other discus were also not eating and beginning to hide. There was also a lot of flashing. I am now on day 5 of 6 of the kana treatment for the main tank. The treatment has resulted in behavioral improvement for all fish, including elimination of flashing. I believe that they were suffering from a bacterial gill infection.

After I complete the treatment of the main tank, should I put the QT fish immediately back into the main tank or should I keep him in QT for a while to build up his strength? Due to his ordeal, he is smaller than the others. Would putting him back in now risk his recovery? Should I fatten him up more first? I am not worried about him infecting the main tank with anything, as both tanks underwent the same treatment, I am more worried about the stress of going back to the main tank reversing his recovery. At the same time, I wonder if he is missing companionship and more space. Also, I am changing the QT water frequently, but feel the main tank probably has more consistent water quality than the QT.

Thanks for taking the time to read, any advice will be appreciated!

Eric,

First off, way to go saving the fish.. sounded like you were headed for disaster but righted the ship quite well...

I think the answer to your question will be told to you by the fish and your observations. How much smaller is he? Do you have any pictures...

If it were me I would leave him in QT for a bit longer and monitor, keep up with large daily water changes and fatten him up for sure. Make sure he is over the stress of the meds and eating well before he goes back in. That being said I don' think he needs to be isolated for weeks on end, but I may give it a few weeks to get him into a flow then add him back to the tank...

When adding him back I would also do so as the fish were well fed and distracted in some way, such as during a wc... Ive always found plopping a solo fish in a hungry tank out of no where is like red in front of a bull and its like lets mess with the new dude... Id have them fed, do a wc and sneak him in there so he kinda blends back in...

Also once he is in the tank really keep and eye on him...

Thanks Phil, it has been stressful, but there have been more highs than lows the past week and I am hopeful I got the situation under control.

Thanks for the guidance, I will definitely fatten him up before putting him back in the community tank. He is looking rougher in this picture than I thought he would, and he is obviously stunted (eye ratio), about 1" smaller than the bigger ones that were only slightly bigger 5 weeks ago. He now spends his time strutting around the QT tank and he is not clamped like in the pic; he is deathly afraid of the camera, which made him clamp up. For some reason he looks better in person than in the pic, probably because I have seen him in a worse state a week ago.

He is getting bigger and stronger! Also, I have transitioned from scary "Old Testament God" to generous an loving "New Testament God" in his eyes. Thanks to FDBW, our friendship and his health are really making progress :)

I know watching this fish grow is nowhere near interesting for the vast majority of folks on here, but I figure this could be useful for others that have a sick/stunted fish and are trying to make a decision whether to grow it out or not. For that purpose I think I will continue posting periodic pictures to give those in a similar predicament an idea of what to expect.

Background: This fish was about 2.5" when I got him. He did not eat for a month. Did not grow, got very skinny and sickly. White feces, flashing, hiding.

Perhaps there is a better place for this thread? Could a mod move it?

He is quickly getting a lot of color (blue pigeon blood). He is eating FDBW 4x a day - beefheart 1x aday - brine shrimp 1x a day.

It's is actually very valuable information you provide so don't discount that and please update!!

Where or why do you want the thread moved I am confused there. Sorry

Thanks Phil! Sorry, I am the one confused. I thought this was in the Emergency Room section, but it is already in the general discussion.

About a week ago I called an audible and put him back into the main tank. He was eating so well and growing so fast and eating the same foods as the main tank, so I thought it was for the best. Everything has gone very smoothly, his return has mellowed out some aggression in the tank actually. Surprisingly, he is now not the smallest in the tank. That one on one attention put him right into the middle of the pecking order. I have hopes that he will only be minimally affected by his month-long childhood ordeal.

Taking a step back and comparing these to the pic from 3 weeks ago (which was an improvement over his worst state), I am pleasantly surprised. I did not think he would live, much less make such a dramatic 180. I am glad that I put in the effort to save him.

Update: The tank is now bare bottom and my wife has named him "Dr Phil"

He is growing fast and somehow he is now the third biggest in the tank. Starting to get his big boy colors.

The only issue I have with him is that he is really peppered. I have two other PB's with practically no peppering. Any thoughts on why? Could it be related to his ordeal? I placed white liner underneath the tank so the floor would be white, so it is not that.

Another update for posterity.

He is now in a full on growth spurt and is almost the same size as all of his tankmates. His colors are changing so fast it can be startling.

I upgraded to a 120 gallon tank and painted the bottom white, this cleared up almost all the peppering, I guess the white paper underneath the tank is not as effective as painting the underside of the tank.

I am not an expert on discus ascetics, so comments are welcome regarding stunting. The eye ratio has quickly improved, although he is a little high bodied.

Here is an updated photo. Any comments on how he is turning out ascetically are welcome. I am pleasantly surprised with his size, he is now among the largest in my tank, which can be seen from the picture. Color is developing nicely, although he is still peppered in his face. He has a small "beak" which seems to be getting less prevalent.

I am not an expert, but I think he is turning out to be an acceptable fish. Not a contest winner, but I am glad he is in my tank.

A couple months have passed so I think I will post an update. This guy is pushing 6" (#2 biggest in my tank) and I think he turned out to have a great shape. He has some uneven fins from an unrelated fin infection but I think all he needs is a "haircut" to fix that cosmetic issue. I am really glad that I did not follow the advice to euthanize.
