I don't trust mine as far as I can throw it. It cost less than $50. I want to spend $100. $150 will hurt. $200 will make me bleed but I can handle it. More than that will make me bleed and cry. I need advice only from people who know.

These are really good, the ones made by VWR:

Mine is the same model only its 10 years old. Maybe you can get lucky and find one on Ebay.

I just got one from Thermoworks.com, Industrial IR Gun (IR-Gun-S), $39.00 + S/H. (http://www.thermoworks.com/IR-Gun)
Does the job for me.

Thanks. I ended up ordering this one made by the same company. I like the gun style and this one made me hurt $40 less.

That should work. Mine always reads within 1 degree of what the cheapie thermometers or the controllers say. The kids got ahold of it once and were running around measuring the freezer and the woodstove and the various parts of a horse. I got it back before it disappeared.

Well, well, well...I got my new thermometer today and found out that my cheap one was indeed a piece of crap. No wonder the poor dears haven't been breeding! It was 101 degrees here today and the real temp in my Discus tanks is 79 and 80 degrees when the crap thermometer said that it is 84 which is is a bit high for breeding. God knows how low it has dropped overnight. I'll toss the old one in the trash.

I knew that it had to be wrong. I've never been able to unplug the heaters during the heat of the summer in my Discus tanks, but the crap thermometer said that I should so I did. Thank God the Discus didn't get sick due to me depending on a cheap thermometer.

Thanks much, Dan.

I got about a dozen of those cheapo thermometers and bundled all the probes together and put them all in one tank. Several had temps that were out to lunch relative to the rest, those got tossed out. Now I have one in each tank and glance at them periodically.

May your tanks soon be swarming with fry.
