Ok, so I wasn't even sure where to post this or what sort of answers or info I could gather, so I tossed it here in my homesteader....

Since this forum is filled with many intelligent folks full of a lot of info, especially with regards to living creatures I figured why not toss it out there...

I've been in my new home about a year now, so I am going through all of the seasons as a first and seeing different things and patterns. I moved from Manhattan and a tiny apt, to a nice sized home on the north shore of long island. I have noticed lately, pretty much every night, a rather large slug population around my home. They are on my walk ways, garage door and all around the grassy areas. I noticed them at first pre and post rain storms but now they seem to be out even more often. I will include some pics of the ones I am seeing.

Anyone have any info on slugs? Fun facts, uses for them, their purpose... It just peaked my curiosity and I figured let me see what you guys have to say.

So feel free to enlighten me with your slug info and knowledge! Happy to hear what you all have to say!

fun fact: pour salt on them and have fun. they are an incredible pest, will eat your flowers while you sleep, will leave slimy residue all over your outdoor railings side walks and flowers. From a gardners perspective, they are a pest and must be ridded. You can put out a shallow jar of beer, yes beer and they will go to it to eat it and will die

Thanks Jacklyn... Eeesh I had no idea they were so pesky. We haven't begun to garden or landscape much yet, that will probably wait till this fall or maybe even spring time...

I knew about the salt thing, but felt that was awful cruel... :/

Is there any benefit to them, fish food, etc?

I don't have many around my house but I do see them while our and about working.

From what I remember of when my dad used to garden is they make snail and slug poison.

This is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh.

@ Phil they would do wonders for algae control in your wild discus tank!

When I was in Mobile we had slugs. Lots of them but smaller that that big guy you posted. I had an overcrowded 60 gallon of Jewel Cichlids at the time. They're beautiful fish but they'll breed in sewer water. I'd collect the slugs every day and feed them to the Jewels. They scarfed them. Only fish I know with such bad taste in food.
