Just looking for info on what temps others r heating their aged water to before adding to their discus tanks. I've read a wide range, all the way from no heat (room temp?) -> same temp as tank. I'm looking at large wc in the 90% range on the 180gal which I keep at 82F. Because my water barrel is in the cold basement I'm thinking I should heat the water up ahead of time. But I see some experienced keepers claim that they use cold water with no ill effects. Thanks ahead of time for your feedback!

Everything I have read says it should be tank temp. I don't age water but I match temp at faucet when filling.

I keep mine with a controller set at 27C, or about 80-81F

if you're doing 90% water change. it's best and safest to heat the water to at atleast 78 degrees before doing the water change. or u can not heat it at all and just do 40-50% water change. i do weekly 40% water change so i dont heat the water at all.

I go same as the tank and don't see why you would do it any other way... Throw a heater in there and not worry...

Mine is just slightly cooler in the range of 80 F aging as compared to 82 F tank. Never had any issues with just a few degress difference.

thanks guys! im planning to match the temp as thats what i currently do with wc straight from tap. i guess im just thinking about cases where i may want to use the water before its up to the tank temp and if thats OK. im gonna have to time how long it takes to heat the barrel up so i know when to turn the heater on, or just leave it on all the time, but that seems like a waste of energy. i still have to look around for some kind of insulation to wrap the barrel in, esp in winter. the barrel is so deep that i also expect the heater will dangle awkwardly in there thru the hole in the top center area but i dont think that can be helped.

Wrap the barrel with Reflective insulation you get from hardware stores like Rona and place a piece of Styrofoam under it.Aquarium heaters have long enough cord(6 feet) that heater will lay at the bottom of the barrel.

i keep my barrels at tank temp....this is what i use on my 2 brute barrels. i tried fiberglass insulation but it gets all over. this is so much neater to use. you can double it if you feel you need more insulating.

I age/aerate my water in a 75 gal. barrel.I just dump a couple of buckets of hot water in from the tap just before going in the tank.I also use no chlorine removers to my aged water. The chlorine evaporates by the time I need the water.

I do the same as Ralph. Tanks at 82, WC water at 80. I feel that it mimics a good rain and rain water is always cooler than the water in the river.

Great point about rain water! I learn something new everyday on this forum :)

perfect, we have both a home depot and a lowes in town so I will shop around for something like those wraps. its a very tall tank, shaped like a water heater so it should be easy to wrap, just need a lot of material to cover it.

i like this idea! what % do u change when using slightly cooler water? do u do this even for large wc? or is it something to consider only when doing smaller wc?
