Does anyone utilize a backup like this for power outages? Good deal on this right now, but I am not sure how long it would support a heater and airpump during an outage. Any feedback from folks utilizing these for computer or aquarium backup would be helpful. Thanks!

I don't use one, but it is my ultimate goal to have one or a few with tanks tied into them along with the computers. Interested in what people say as well.

Eric, That system wont last long...900 watts and its pure sine. You dont need pure sine for an aquarium. Sensitive electronics like computers and lcds need them for pumps, lights and heater a modified sine inverter is more than adequate.

Those backups are great for sensitive systems...but they are really made not so much for running a system but for keeping your power supply uninterupted if you lose power...so you can finish a project, safely close things down etc.

You would be better off investing in a good deep cycle 12vdc battery something in the 100 ah range.(2 would be better wired in parallel) hooking it up an inverter(1200 watt-2000 watts)... that will run a typical tank quite a while...

Thanks for the always great advice Al. I need to get the backup power situation under control, especially with the earthquake for the Pacific NW (cascadia subduction zone). A deep cycle 12vdc battery w/ inverter will be on my Christmas list this year.

If you have the finances and can run one...look into invert generators... hondas are great but pricy.. i have Ryobi thats can be had for about $450 used $600 new. They are 2000 watt units...super quiet ,small profile generators. Good for a tank or two and electronics. A tank of gas will run hours and hours...

Not for use in house... run outside and use extension cord. The deepcycle battery inverter sysyem can be used indoors....great to have as a backup.

This is where having daily water changes, bare bottom tanks and low stocking rates come in. Ten years ago, 100 mph straight line winds came through the neighborhood and we lost power for 5 days. No aeration, no heat. No fish lost.

This is encouraging! I assume it wasn't during the frosty Minnesota winter though right? :)

This is what we use: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200665208_200665208?cm_mmc=Google-pla&utm_source=Google_PLA&utm_medium=Generators%20%3E%20Residential%20Standb y%20Generators&utm_campaign=Generac&utm_content=54265&gclid=CMit5La40dACFUg2gQodWoICNQ

Natural gas powered, comes on automatically, and runs as long as you have natural gas. We have storms that come through northern illinois, especially ice storms in the winter that can knock out power for days. Not with this baby!

How much did installation cost?

I have a Briggs & Stratton 5500 watt gasoline generator, and I had an electrician wire an outside outlet that is connected to my circuit panel, and can backfeed the circuit panel to power the whole house. One full gas tank lasts around 19 hours. The generator cost roughly $600 and the electricians bill was $300. Very well spent investment.

I ended up getting this...

Since I live in a dense urban area, noise was a key factor. Time to call an electrician! It might get its first test tonight though, rare ice and high winds are in the forecast
