A guy at work said he cycles his new fish tanks with pieces of turkey instead of a shrimp as turkey is more likely to be in the fridge. Is there any problem with using turkey to create beneficial bacteria for the nitrogen cycle?

Or you can buy bio-spiria or Dr.Tims one and done.... Then you just put fish in boom done.

I've had nothing but success with tetra safe start. Started 4 aquariums with no issues.

Why not just use ammonia? I've cycled several using only ammonia and it worked fine. I tried Dr Tims once and it did move to the nitrite stage fast it took several weeks to make it to the nitrate (completed ) stage.

It should be fine. That being said just using cheap ammonia (no additives) from a place like ace hardware is the best and fastest IME. You can add bottled bacteria if you like, but a basic ammonia test kit so you know the tank can process 1ppm (or 2 or 3 or....) overnight is really the way to go.

I would imagine this would lead to an "interesting" smell released from your tank. I agree with others using ammonia from ACE. Very effective and odorless.
