Ryan and I paid a visit to John at his place in Ft. Myers. Bought home eight little Unini Heckels. They are cute, healthy buggers and are already trying Al's FDBWs. Thank you John for such healthy little fish. Better pictures later. :D

Very nice Pat. You always seem to get your hands on the nicest fish. Out of all the wilds I'd have to say that Heckles are my favorite, and would gladly have them if l a made the change. Looking forward to updates on these beauties.

I agree Al, they are nicely filled out and healthy. I will keep them in the 40 breeder for now and once they settle and grow a bit, to a 75 and later to a 180. John also had some Rio Negro babies and they looked great also. They were a little smaller then the Unini.

Thanks Eric, these guys are in a dark tea strained tank. They are not as shy as I expected and are starting to eat Al's FDBWs. John only feeds bloodworms so a bit of a transition for them. They are still a bit broody with me but slowly improving.

I want to see them settle a bit Phil. Whenever I place anything close to the tank they go cower under the heater and I am about to get busy with my daughter who arrives today. I will soon.

Mine have been the same way on and off lately... I am hoping it is just still and adjustment period as things are new. Do you run a light on this tank, if so how often? I have a light arriving today that I am excited about. I think that the placement of my tank mixed with the bow front may be throwing them shadows or something that is making them less friendly...

Love these fish, especially because they are small and "grow-able"! Where did you get them? I would be interested in buying some.

Greg,

This thread is in the sponsor section for John Snookn - who is a wild importer from Florida.

He has updated stock lists on his website and you can email or call him! Good luck! lol

Phil, I am not running a light over the tank. Only room lights. I think you have the same fixture I have. If so there is a sunrise/set setting which is quite dim. Also the color presets are dim-able also. Run the tank with no lights and observe. If the fish are acting normal without lights then that gives you a starting point. Also consider some rooibos tea. It will add tannins, darken the water and dim any overhead lights.

Greg, like Phil said John has them now. There are two tanks of them. He also has Rio Negro Heckel babies which are a bit smaller (and cheaper) then the Unini Heckels.

Hi Pat I will try to get some. haven't used camera in years!

I only have 3 left of the heckles and 3 altums and 2 of the browns I got at the same time. They were all fine for years until I turned the uv off and went to just aged tap. bacterial infection got a few.
I want to get more from john, just not ready to go back to uv and ro/tap just yet plus whatever is the tank system i'm sure is still there. so when these go I will start again.
I was fun raising them, gotta be 5-6 years with them now.

Jim,

Sorry to hear about the losses. Do you think it was just that. I guess for some this will add a tick in the UV favor...

What type of water do you have there?

jimg
01-29-2017, 11:07 AM
Without a doubt from water source. UV needs to be treating all water entering house to work. we have reservoir water. another problem with our water is they will switch over to catskill aqueduct at any given time and that is not good, water will go from ec of 600 or so then when they switch it will drop to 80 or so.
Had these fish for about 5 years with no problems at all then after I shut the system down in about 6 weeks they one by one got one sort of infection or another.

Really sorry to hear that Jim, it's been hit or miss with these little heckels. Lost one to jumping and two to whirling. I have reduced the TDS in the tank to 30 with a temp of 80. Have also reduced the WC percentage to 50%. Things seem to have calmed down some but crossing fingers. The remaining five are outgoing and growing so hopeful.

Wow, I am sorry. That is a really rough day. I know everyone on here says UV is witchery voodoo ********, but I always run mine. 24/7. Maybe it is for piece of mind.

I hope you get things cleared up soon.

jimg

I always kept ec around 80 when they were growing temp 82. I have only done 30% or so wc's 1X a week and they did great for years. now they are in aged and some not aged tap. When I get time and get new ones I will definitely go back to aged ro/tap and the uv.
I never had the whirling issue. I did with altums when they were dime size. 3% salt dip fixed that.

Thank you. these fish are sort of old but I grew them since about 2+ inches always the nicest go first. They are not dying off daily or weekly, been going downhill for almost a year. uv is in my experience not worth the money on a tank itself. you need to treat all the water entering the house before the tanks and tanks must not have any problems to start with.
