View Full Version : Removing Microbubbles - Effect on pH?

Due to aestetics and in order to preserve my marriage, I have to store my water aging barrel outside. This time of the year that is a real PIA, so I have been going direct from the tap. Unfortunately, this time of year the cold weather cause a lot of microbubbles. I have dealt with the bubbles (as discussed in a different thread) by using this (works great!!!)

My question is, will removing the microbubbles also stabilize the pH? My understanding is that it is these gasses that are affecting pH. I plan on testing this but was wondering if anyone had already done so?

Someone will probably know for sure, but I thought that the pH change during aging is determined by the CO2-content in your tap water. The microbubbles on the other hand is just oxygen.

So my guess is that removing microbubbles will not stabilize your pH.

I agree with this. Microbubbles are made up of gases other than CO2: nitrogen & oxygen. N and O come out of solution fast because they are not nearly as soluble in water as CO2. Because CO2 has an affinity for water, it takes much longer for excess CO2 to leave the water, so even if you remove the microbubbles in this way you will still have the same pH swing, if any.
